Orientation, January 28-February 3

Hello students and welcome to Counseling 120, College and Career Success! Take a look at my video introduction above. Please introduce yourself by telling us about your interests, hobbies and what is important in your life and maybe share a photo or video of yourself as one of your postings this week. As your second posting, tell us about your educational journey, why you are taking this class and your goals and dreams for the future and include comments about other students' postings.

This class is especially useful for those of you who want to understand yourself better and choose a major and career that matches your gifts and talents. The class also meets a general education requirement for transfer to state universities. If this is your first class in college, you are off to a good start. If you are a continuing student, there are some great benefits. You will become familiar with some new learning tools that will make your future education easier.

Since the course is online, you can do the work anytime or any place during the week. For best results, be sure to set aside time for working on this class each week and not wait unitl the last minute to do the work. I look forward to working with all of you this semester.

Marsha Fralick’s Introduction
Here is an example of a 100 word introduction:

I am your professor for Counseling 120. I retired from Cuyamaca College where I worked from 1978-2007 as a counselor and instructor for this course. I play many roles in life. I am a Grandmother with 2 young granddaughters. I enjoy taking care of them frequently and watching them grow. My own children are grown up and have their own careers and homes. I have my own business and work with colleges across the country in training faculty to teach college success courses. In my leisure time I enjoy traveling and being active.  I traveled to Hawaii and Alaska over the summer. It was great!
Marsha Fralick’s Educational Journey

Here is an example of a 100 word posting.
I attended a small country high school in New Mexico and was a good student. When I went to the University of New Mexico, I found that it was a whole new world and I was not prepared for it. I struggled to be successful in college and had to learn how to listen to lectures, take notes and prepare for exams. I also had uncertain career goals. When I started working at a college, I remembered those years that I struggled and decided to invent a course that would help students to be successful. It has been a fun and rewarding adventure for the last 33 years.

I’m really looking forward to this class because it will give me an idea on what to do in life. I’m really motivated on learning and exploring new things. So hopefully this class will do just the thing. I work full time, and I’m taking 12 units this semester at Cuyamaca. Looking forward to interact with all of you. Thank you for your time.

Hello classmates. My name is Lana'e Fulton and am 31 years old. I graduated High School in 1999 from El Capitan. I have 3 children under the age of 12 and all boys. I am a full time mother and student. I decided to start college later in life because I got married and had children right out of college. I went through a divorce and realized I need to get a career going of my own. I am currently working on becoming a Paralegal but my motivation is opening my own legal document preparation service. I really do not have time for hobbies of my own since my youngest son is 2. We do however frequent Sea World, Disneyland and the Zoo. I do like to try and go shopping and lunch with one of my friends every week when I am not in school. I am busy most of the time getting the older boys to and from all of their activities. I am looking forward to a great semester.

  7. Hi every one. Hi Mrs. Marsha. My name is Emad Esho, and I am from Iraq. Two month ago, I became a United State citizen. This is my last semester in Cuyamaca College. My major is Math. This is my second online course. I took math 245, math 284, English 124, and this class, so it is the hardest semester for me before transferring to SDSU. I am married since 1989. I have four children. My oldest son is an SDSU student and he is working to earn his degree in civil engineering. The second is full time student at Cuyamaca College. My daughter will graduate from high school this year. We are large family so I don’t have any time for my hobbies. I believe when you show to your children you are working hard to reach your goals this will give them hope to work very hard to be something in future.

  13. MARLO GEORGIS- Educational Journey 1-29-13

The most important quality that students need to be successful in college and their future career is an education and a positive attitude. What I mean by that, these days you need a degree if you want to do anything in your life. Looking at it now with the economy going down day by day, a 4 year degree really doesn’t do any justice. It’s sad to say but these big companies now are paying the same amount of money if you have degree of not. So, never be lazy, always be a positive and thoughtful thinker, so maybe one day the hard work you put in pays off. The society that we live in now is all about attitude that we carry in our image. No company will ever hire an insecure and negative employee. I think attitude brings a lot to the table, both mentally and physically. As we look around the world all we see is war and poverty. But in our everyday life we see Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, which provides positive attitude. I’m sure there is a lot more important qualities out there, but to me, we need an education and to be positive at everything we will do now and in the future.

This is my second semester attending Grossmont College and this is my first online course I have taken. I am enrolled in one more online course for psych 120 as well. I graduated from Steele Canyon High School in 2012. I am taking 15 units this semester and my goal in life is to major in Kinesiology and become a Physical Therapist. I am very excited for my classes because it only means I am one step closer to doing what I want to do in life and reaching my goal. I struggle a little when it comes to studying strategies, so I hope this class will help me grow as a student.

  17. Hello, to all; I am Julia and just turned twenty-five years old last month. After high school, I fell in love with my soul-mate, who is now my husband. Drunk with young love, and indecisive, I decided that working full time was a better option for me, than stumbling around college for seven years, with out a clue. That was until two years ago, when I re-enrolled in college, at the ripe age of twenty-three, and have been ever since. I am enrolled full time, to attain a degree in English, and work at a credit union in El Cajon. I have learned in life it is never too late to move forth through, the ever changing, currents of success. As long as you are moved forth by passion and determination, you are bound to get there someday.

  19. Hello, my name is DeAndre Savage. I am 27 years old, born and raised in San Diego ca. I have three brothers and two sisters. My major is Water and Waste Water Technology. Currently I work for the City of San Diego Water Department as a full time Water Systems Technician. This will be my seventh year with the company in October. Graduated from Lincoln High School in 2003 then after that went to San Diego Mesa College. At that time I was very unfocused and didn’t really put as much time and effort into school as I should and eventually stopped going and got a job. Huge regret in my life. Now I have come to realize whats really important in life plus being the second oldest I have to set a positive example for my younger brothers and sisters. With my change of attitude towards school and being a more responsible person I have almost completed my goal of graduating with a AS then even transferring on to pursue a BA at SDSU. So in conclusion I am really excited about the start of this semester because that put brings me that much closer to accomplishing my goal.

  20. My educational journey has been a long one. After graduating from Lincoln High School on 2003 I then attended San Diego Mesa college for one semester and played football. The next semester I went to San Diego City college due to the fact that it was closer to my house. I attended two semesters there but really didn’t put much effort in to it at all. I had so many other distractions going on in life that I didn’t know how to prioritize and let college get put on the back burner. Now after a long break and really maturing as a man I have come to realize that I actually do like school and it is one if my top priorities. The reason I am taking this class is because it meets a transfer requirement but it also seemed interesting. My goals and dreams for the future are to graduate with a AS in Water & Waste Water Technology from Cuyamaca College then transfer to SDSU, then graduate with a BA in Public Administration. Career wise I am already in the field that I love and enjoy but like most people I want to promote and become one of the upper management people. I believe by accomplishing the degrees that I am on track to complete I will be able to make that become reality.

  21. Introduction:

Hello fellow classmates and professor, my name is Mayra. I have two brothers a niece and a nephew. I am the middle child and many people look up to for some reason :) I love to eat and travel whenever I get the chance to-literally. Life has taken me in so many different paths that have taught me a great deal about myself. I have come to the realization though that I am now ready for a major change in events and thought taking a class would be the first step. I have never known what it is not like a job that I have had so moving forward it should be interesting to see what I find out about myself and my career.

    Educational Journey:

I will have to start off with, I really love to learn and you will be like oh yes she does in a minute! I have an A.A in Liberal Studies, a B.A. in Sociology with a minor in Spanish, an M.B.A in Leadership and Management and are currently taking intermediate accounting at UCSD in hopes of getting an Accounting Certificate one day. I currently work in the tax world and have a few clients of my own. Like I mentioned before, I have come across lots of changes and are now ready to look into perhaps becoming a CPA since it is highly looked at in the field of work that I currently do. I love the tax aspect but the accounting side is a bit teeth grinding for me but I will hopefully soon find out through this class what types of career would be good for me. At the moment I feel like I am stuck because I love what I do but on the same token in order to be at the level I should be I would need to further my studies and certifications. So professor thank in you advance, anything you throw my way is greatly appreciated. I am ready to see the light at the end of the tunnel and I know there is one but it is very far in the distance

  24. I think the most important quality someone needs to have to be successful in college is focus. It's easy to lose track of school and instead hang out with friends. You also have to focus on your school work and make sure your doing a good job. This also applies to anything else you do such as a future career. There's going to be times where you don't want to go to school or work but you just have to focus and get the job done. Focus is one of the biggest qualities a person can have to do a good job in life.

  25. Hello,
My educational journey began pretty usuall the first 12 years of school. I went through Kindergarden to High school fairly easily, and I was a pretty good student. My first college course that I took was medical assisting clinical; which I passed with ease, but when I did some more exploring in that particular feild I did not pursue it and decided to move in a diferent directions. These last few years have been tough but I did manage to go to Palomar college in San Marcos ca, for a bit. There I studied photography and psychology. I recently moved back down to east san diego county and have decided that going back to school again is right for me right now. So here I am begining school here at cuyamaca college. I am excited to continue my journey getting back into the college world and studying psychology. I'm ready to change my life around and get the best out of everything.

I just recently graduated from high school and other than that i've only taken some art classes at an art school locally in my town. I'm attending Cuyamaca College for my general education and i'm hoping to transfer to an art school such as The Art Institute and work towards a Bachelors degree in Advertising. Art has always been my best subject without causing me stress so it's what I want to do in life! I'm hoping to get all the education I need to one day be an art director. I know art is a hard business to get into unless you're as great as Van Gogh or Salvidor Dali, but I dream big and i'm hoping this class will help me choose a career close to my dreams, that's practical.

As far as my education goes, I am attending Cuyamaca, hoping to transfer to SDSU after a couple years. I attended high school at Steele Canyon. High School was an adventure for me and taught me many things. I know my favorite subjects are English because I love to write, and Math. I do not know what my major is yet so I am hoping this class helps me figure it out. I started out wanting to be a lawyer then changed to many other things like FBI agent, nurse, teacher, and fashion designer. I have talked to a few people and they said its normal to be changing my mind and that I should take random classes to see what interests me the most, so that is what I am doing now. I still have my mind set on being an FBI agent, or anything else in the police force because I find that job a good way to help others who are in need and that is what I love to do. I hope it all works out for me after this class!

  29. My education
In 1981 the Gulf War started between Iraq and Iran and it was bad luck to me. In 1983 1 graduated from High school. The Iraqi regime started to send every adult to fighting. I was like any other Iraqi and had to go to fight for his country and that stopped my education. In 1991 the government made me free from the amry, but the problem was I can’t start my education again for several reasons. First because I was married and I need to work to live. Second the Gulf War II had started. In 2007 we came to United State as refugees. Since then, I started to purse my dream of being a math teacher. It was a challenge to me and I accepted it and why not if have the chance. I started in spring 2009 in Cuyamaca College and now, I’m almost at the end of the road. I read all comment for student in my class Coun 120 and I am the oldest one, so I want say some words to those some of them in my children age. You must thanks God a lot because you are living in this great country and give you the chance to continue your education. Last thing the education like sun that lights your life.

  30. What is the most important quality that students need to be successful in college or their future career?

    This is my opinion:
The most important quality that students need to be successful in college or their future career are being able to analyze situations, come up with resolutions to issues that arise from any given point of scenarios and have effective communication skills. I can remember from my younger years that I honestly did not have the best communication skills but as I grew older I realized that not everyone will have the same insight on certain things. Being able to analyze situations, in my opinion is similar to the flight or fight response that our bodies are accustomed to. Most are unaware that we subconsciously use those responses in our daily routines.

Hello! My name is Bryndon Humphrey, I am 19 and currently a second year Business Management major. I was born and raised here in sunny San Diego, but to be more specific - Spring Valley. A few of my hobbies and interests are fitness, poetry, spoken word, and jazz. I am currently going to school full time while working in retail. An interesting fact about me is that I have completed a Triathlon; which is similar to a marathon but involves swimming, biking, and running long distances all back to back in that order. It was nice reading all of your introductions and educational backgrounds, you all seem like interesting people so hopefully this will be a great semester!

  34. Education History
As a child I went to a small private school until middle school. I choose to switch to a public school, Parkway Middle School, because I felt I wasn't socially up to par. After graduating from Parkway I went to Helix Charter High School where I took all Advanced Placement and Honors classes while being an active member of the service club Kiwanis Educated Youth. I managed to pass a few of the Advanced Placement tests, however my work ethic was lacking. When college acceptance time rolled around I got accepted to SFSU, CSUF, and CSULA but I felt I could do better. So here I am currently trying my hardest to transfer to one of the schools in the University of California system. That sums up my educational background pretty well, so thank you for taking the time to read this!

When I was little I went to Carver elementary then I went to Mann middle school. The high school I attended was Scripps ranch high school. I loved the school and it was full of nice people. It was early in high school I noticed that I was suffering from constant head aches, stomach pains and many other bizarre symptoms that made it incredibly difficult to focus in class. It was not until my Jr. year that I discovered I was suffering from a anxiety disorder. Despite how much I struggled in high school due this anxiety disorder I still want to pursue an Education. So here I am in Cuyamaca working on my general education. I am not cretin on a major yet but as I said in my introduction I have an interest in psychology. I wish to learn as much as I can form this class so that I will do better in my future.

  40. for me the best way to be successful person in school and life is to be good time manager. students must manage their time to do all their assignments during weekends; for me I do my best to finish the whole week assignments during the weekend. I have short term English classes this semester, so I expect to work hard to pass them with good grades. There is another important thing students must follow to be successful; students must have goals for the future. It is known that any person have goal pass life with better results than a person with no goals.I have some goals. One of my goals is to pass all my courses in the college with A's then I want to go to UCSD or SDSU to get my degree in pharmacy.

    1. I agree that time management is one of the most crucial factors in being successful in school and life. It is hard to maintain a balance, but if you put the hardest thing first, the rest may seem easier. Best of luck; put your mind to it and I know you can get those grades.

    1. Hello, your journey is very interesting. I would like to hear more about your educational experience outside of the United States and the comparisons you can make between the two countries. There may be some methodologies in Iraq, Jorden, or Lebanon that can be used in the U.S. Good luck with the class and take care.

  46. My education started in Bakersfeild where I grew up. I went to Rosedale North elementary until sixth grade. Then I went to Freedom Middle School for two years. After that I went to Frontier High for four years where I played football and wrestled. High school was fun but I never really took school as serious as I should have, I was more into having fun and hanging out with friends then hitting the books. Now that I'm here I plan to start taking school more seriously and make it my number one priority. I would like to become a petroleum engineer but I'm very indecisive so who knows what'll happen. I'm very excited to see what the future has in store for me.

  47. I have gone to multiple elementary schools, and graduated from high school in 2006. I graduated with a 4.0, with honors; but I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my life. Right after high school, I enrolled at Grossmont College and for two semesters faked my dedication. For the first time in my education, I pulled C's and D's. I realized that I needed a new path. I went to Beauty College and attained a certificate, then got hired at my current job. It took me four years to fuigure out that I wanted to teach English. Now I am looking forward to this class, to help me map out my future. I am twenty-five, and have goals to be done with school before my thirtieth birthday.

  52. Hello, my name is Chynna Obana and I’m 23 years old. I was born and raised in San Diego. I like traveling and experiencing new things. I recently went to Chicago and I’m planning on visiting Washington, D.C. and New York soon to see if I would want to move to the East Coast. When I visit a new place I like to experience the city’s food, performing arts, and transportation system. Spending time with my family and building strong relationships with people are extremely important to me. Because of this, I try to stay connected with people I meet in college. I have recently started to be more health conscious, so I have been eating healthier and being more active in my life. A life goal of mine is to run at least a half marathon.

I’m taking this class because I wanted to learn how to be a better student and confirm my career path. I want to go into the education, specifically higher education. I’m very interested in access and retention issues of college students from under-represented communities. My goals are to eventually achieve a Master’s Degree or Ph.D in Higher Education. With this degree I want to be a college counselor and eventually make my up towards administration.

I plan on getting a bachelors degree in health science and continuing on to PA school. I have always really enjoyed the medical field and I think it would be a great career for me. If I don’t decide to go to PA school, I will definitely try to aim for medical school. I really like many areas of the medical field but anesthesiology is one that I am most interested in. Hopefully I will be able to reach my goals and have a great career as a doctor.

  62. Hi my name is Sarah and this is my second semester in college. I recently graduated from Steele canyon high school in June and I've taken college courses since. I grew up in San Diego CA and enjoy the beautiful sun. I'm a big sports fan and enjoy attending games with my friends and family. I love traveling and sight seeing. I spent a lot of my time growing up moving around and traveling. Despite traveling so much I still prefer San Diego above all. I just love the beautiful weather and enjoy soaking up the sun.

As for my education. I recently graduated Steele canyon high school (June). I took several Ap classes that we're very beneficial for me. They allowed me to branch out and learn as if i was in college, giving me a head start. After learning a lot about AP Government and Politics I decided that i wanted to become a Lawyer. Currently, I am majoring in political science and hoping to transfer to San Diego State University. I really believe that Law is so intresting and with the right knowledge i can become a good lawyer. I plan on going to Law school right after SDSU and continuing my education there. Overall, this could take me about 7 years to finish, but I am willing to work extra hard to earn my law degree and work in the career of my choice. I look forward to learning about myself in this class and expanding my knowledge.
