Chapter 6, Managing Time and Money, March 11-17

This new chapter is about time management and is one of the most powerful chapters in the text. For this week's discussion, share one of your lifetime goals and describe the time management techniques you will use to accomplish this goal. If there are obstacles in the way, how will you deal with them?

For your second post, read another student's post and make a comment about it. Sometimes it is helpful to read about other students' goals and how they are managing to accomplish them. The first post can be longer and the second one can be shorter.

I will share with you one of my lifetime goals and how I used the ideas in this chapter to accomplish it. My lifetime goal was to write a book on how to be successful in college because I struggled as a young college student and learned how to be successful. Then I taught the topic for 30 years. I had some time off from work and set as my goal to write the text. I found myself distracted by things around the home. I would get up in the morning and exercise, make myself a nice breakfast, read the paper and do a few household chores. Soon the day was gone and I had not accomplished my goal. I decided to work on my goal first and then reward myself with exercise and other things that I wanted to do. It was just a matter of rearranging my tasks. I still found it difficult to get started. I used the idea of a leading task. I would just sit at the computer, fill my head with ideas and start to write. Then I would refine the writing the next day. Within 6 months I had the first draft of the text written. Today it is used in about 60 colleges across the country. The CollegeScope material is my latest project.

Ok, I have shared one of my goals and how I accomplished it. Now it is your turn. Tell about something you accomplished in the past or something you hope to accomplish in the future. See if you can use some of the time management ideas in the text.

  1. One of my life time goals that I have that is to become a Nurse. My timing I would have to manage it because in order to become a nurse I need to set aside time for me to study, work on assignments, read the textbook that is provided to me, and etc. For example, because I have a tendency to not really study when I’m suppose to I can make it a goal to study a certain amount of hours a day and so I’m able to get the task done and the more I study or put my all in it it’s more likely that’ll score good on it. Timing would mean that I could say like … During lunch (11am-12pm) and Dinner (5pm-6pm) I could eat and use that time to study as well verses waiting and getting distracted. It’s all about your timing, timing matters a lot when I t come to important things in life..

    1. How's it going Chantel? I agree with you that time is one of the most important things in life. I noticed you said you do have trouble setting aside time for study and other things. Have you every considered making a weekly agenda including all of the things you need to accomplish for that week? I feel like if you break up all of the task you need to do into smaller ones and spread them out across the week in your free time it could really help you in getting started on and finishing certain task. Just a thought...

    2. Kellen,
I appreciate what you've stated . I’m going to actually try and do what you said by trying to weigh it out throughout the week .

  2. One of my lifetime goals is to continue going to college and finish with a degree. I am going to school for psychology and would like to become a family or clinical psychologist. To be able to keep my goal and achieve success in my career of choice I will have to set aside time for studying very often. I am doing that as of now and it is working out very well. I can become easily focused and determined when I am interested in what I am doing. During the weekdays I plan out the times of day that I will have to study and stick to them unless something comes up last minute. I wake up early and have my house to myself so that makes it easier to hop on the computer without being distracted. Throughout the day I try to plan a couple hours here and there that I am able to get on the computer and finish my school work before the weekend. On the weekends I usually have most if not all of my class work done and am able to relax. I plan to keep my focus and be persistent in working towards my goal of graduating college by keeping my lifetime goal in mind knowing how much happiness and security it will help bring to my family for the long run.

I think that your plan sound awesome. I’m glad that your that confident in yourself for accomplishing your goal, and the fact that it'll be way more beneficial to your family is even better you know what I’m saying? I actually like your plan and think I might snatch some of your strategies up. I think that as long you keep your eyes on your future everything will be okay. being a psych, sounds interesting . 2. Hi Chantel,
That's great your studying to be a nurse. It's actually a very cool and interesting job. I went through medical assisting school a few years ago and got my certificate. I found it to be pretty fun. Things got in the way at that time in my life to pursue a career in it, but it's always something that i'll have. Nursing and careers in the medical field will never go away so that's always good to know.Good for you. You just have to keep focused and determined and if you like what your doing it will be easier and funner than you think. I always try to keep a positive attitude about things because I've been through alot and never want to have to struggle like I have before, it's not a fun place to be. The best of luck in your nursing career.

  3. My lifetime goal that I’m focusing on right now in my life is to graduate from college and receive a degree. I never knew how important it was to get an education. Education is a key to success. I believe without an education, no one can get anywhere in life. With the economy nowadays, an education is wroth to get into debt for. This goal can open up so many pathways in life to do whatever you want to do. Having a higher chance to get a well paying job, making you more respectable, and having more knowledge then most people. Time management is important because you must set a finish time. Getting to that finish line is really hard. Most people have jobs and need to take car of their families. But like what Nike says “just do it”. Take the time, figure out a plan, stay calm, and go with the flow. Goals will me met in a nice and steady pace. Then after all the hard work, many doors will open and you’ll see great success rain on you. It’ll take time, but it will come.

You can achieve your goal Marlo just stay focused and even when times get tough just picture how great your future will be.

  4. One of my lifetime goals is to graduate from college with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration. Some the the difficulties I face in getting this goal complete is the fact that I work full time and overtime is almost guaranteed. In order to maintain my lifestyle I currently have I know I must work. But there Is a lot of free time that I have failed to take full advantage of. Now I have found myself trying to make the most of every moment that I can. Instead of procrastinating as much as I used to I know try and make plans to get my school work finished before I do the things that I do for fun like watch ESPN or play x box. Now that I have been some what structured I have noticed that my grades improved and after this semester I will have completed the requirements for my water technology degree. If I can just stay on track I believe I will be able to accomplish my goal and also become the first member in my family do earn a Bachelor’s Degree.

Stay focused on what you’re doing and that degree will be in your hangs in no time. I wish you the best of luck.

  5. One goal in my life is to graduate college. For me goals come very spontaneously, and as of right now that is the biggest and most important. I'm sure the more I grow the more my goals will as well. The strategies I have already used related to time management have to do with setting up my priorities. School has become number one for me, and to keep that from changing I moved here to San Diego. If I would have stayed in Bakersfield my priorities would have been a lot more difficult to manage due to all of the distractions in my home town. By moving here I eliminated many time bandits and really made school my number one priority. Although it is hard I know one day it will pay off and all of this will be worth it.

    2. First of all, I wish to you good luck in your life. Really I like two sentence in which I read in your comments the first sentence was “I ‘m sure the more I grow the more my goals will as well.” I not sure what you mean exactly but I thinks each day mean more experience more goal and it is true. Second thing was “school has become number one for me.” it is and this is your weapons to fighting the life until you reach your goal and then you have the future. We are blind but the education opens our eyes and many other things, it is our key to open all close doors. Good luck.

  6. One of my goals is to graduate college with a degree in advertising or media design. And I know it will take a lot of time and money to accomplish this goal. Some steps I will have to take is to work more and maybe even get a second job so that I can afford to continue my education. And also watch what I spend my money on so that I don't put myself into debt. I know it will be hard work earning a degree but i'm willing to spend all the time I need studying and completing the classes necessary to achieve it.

    1. That is an interesting career and i would recommend if you get a second job is that you pay extra attention to your schooling because it will be really hard to balance two jobs and school. Just remember that school is going to get you those jobs and prior jobs can only get you so far. I do believe you are headed in a great direction so keepit up you will do great.

  7. There are 24 hours a day, like human we spend 9 hours sleeping and rest of other time between work, study, and family. I believe if I control my time management it will be the best way to success in personal and academic life. It is seems I have more than one goal in my life, but the most important one is how can I prove I am good immigrant. Like I am immigrants to U.S I heard and read many things about the immigrants; like how much they harm to U.Z citizen. This goal motivates me to continue going college and finish it, this is the best way to show to who believe I came here to get welfare or something else. I hope after graduate I find a good job then I can pay taxes, work hard to help my students learn in best way. I used my sleeping time like extra time to study and doing my homework. It is my gold time for three reason; quiet, night, and I can use the computer (we have only one).

  8. Managing your money is an important factor in how successful you are in the future. It isn't about how MUCH you make, but more so how it is managed. I have been working in the financial industry for over five years, and have seen some very serious changes in the way people spend their money and time. I think it is important to know the tools available to you as a young adult when making and spending money. Accumulation of debt, especially in college, is a common thing, accepted by most students. I am challenging myself to not accumulate any debt throughout college. This will require me to have a job and seek out scholarships and grants.

  9. I am proud of re-enrolling in college. It is a hard step to take, but now that I am here I will not quit till I finish. These goals I am establishing for myself are manageable, but will require real attention and focus. To help me gain more focus when studying, my husband helped me re-arrange our living room so that the television could not be viewed from the desk where I study. Also I made great use of the weekly schedule provided, and organized my study by healthy intervals. So far I really like my new arrangement and hope to have great success with my new found focus and dedicated time management.

    1. I can completely understand how you feel. I thought it was funny that you rearranged so you could not see the t.v. I have to be in a room with no t.v. or anything so I do not get distracted. It is so easy to look away and get side tracted and get nothing done. I am glad that you like how it is working out so far. Keep up the good work!!!

    2. Aw Julia that is so awesome that you have the support of your husband. That is definitely key is to have the ability to focus and if there are distraction to have others who care help in keeping those distractions to a minimum. Sounds like you are off to a great start it is never too late to learn and that is one thing I do love to do is learn. Just keep at it and it will happen. It really helps if you study something that you enjoy doing as well.

  10. I would have to say the deciding to go back to college is a major accomplishment for myself. Time management is crucial for me in this process. I have 3 children ranging from 2-12. Needless to say my time is spread very thin. I have to get up and get the kids to school, have a 2 year old with me all day, during this time I have cleaning, grocery shopping, errands and all of the fun mommy duties and then have to et the boys from school, get home work done, dinner, baths and so on. I then have to get out of my house on time 2 nights a week to get to class and have time for online classes and homework of my own. If I am not managing my time I will not get anything done and my school is what ends up slipping.

    1. Hello Lanae,
I think it is incredible for someone like yourself with three children have decided to go back to school. You should be very proud of yourself for everything that you are doing, and I'm sure your boys are very proud of you for everything you do. It is important that you are able to balance your son's lives and your school with homework. Try setting up a schedule, it might be helpful and a little stress reliever if you can visually see when to get things done and know you can accomplish them. Even though you might know how to handle all of it, i think seeing it visually is very important so you can spread out all of the things you need to get done. That way for example you can say okay i will have from 5-6 to study or do homework. Most importantly make sure you slow down and have some time for yourself to enjoy everything that is going on so you don't feel so overwhelmed sometimes.

    2. Hi Lanae, it’s great to hear that you have three children and decided to go back to school. That must be extremely difficult to balance three children and go to school at the same time, however, I definitely think that you are making a great decision that will benefit you and your children in the future. I’m sure that it is very important to plan out your time because I don’t have any children and if I don’t plan out my time I cant even get anything done so I cant even begin to imagine how important that is for you. Keep up the good work and good luck in the future.

  11. My Lifetime goal is to become a physical therapist. I have to keep myself focused in order to complete my goal. I need to go to school, go to class, get my homework done, and pay attention in the lecture. There are a lot of little steps to get where i want to be and it will be a lot of hard work but i believe in myself and i have the support form my friends and family so i know i will be able to make it and do this. I am also volunteering at Sharp Grossmont Hospital to get to know the place and people. I work with nurses, doctors, supervisors, and patients. I get to know people and help them out. I feel so lucky to be able to do that because it is important to get involved in volunteering and helping the hospital. This volunteer program will also be able to help me get internships at other hospitals which is amazing. I am very lucky to have this position. Everyday i am one step closer to reaching my goal and i can't wait for that day.

Assistant is a bit different because only two years of schooling is needed rather then 7 years to earn a doctorate degree as a physical therapist! I also plan on getting a bachelors in business after I get licensed as an assistant. I like the idea of volunteering at sharp Grossmont hospital to have some experience in the field, that never came to my mind. Its great to know that you enjoy what you are doing. It is hard, and may be overwhelming, but In the long run it will be worth it. Also because you enjoy what you do, you will be graduating obtaining the degree you wanted to achieve before you know it! I wish you good luck!!

    1. Hi Revan, I am trying to work on my procrastination too. It can be quite a bummer when you find out you have a homework assignment due the next day and it has not even been started. I am also trying to motivate myself by rewarding free time to myself with friends. Sometimes the people we care about can push us the most. My friends are in school to and if I want to hang out with them I need do my home work right away or else I will be stuck home working. Our goals may be quite different but it sounds like these strategies we learned can really apply to just about anybody. I wish you the best of luck on your life goals.

  13. One of my life time goals is to reach a position that allows me to help people in a one on one environment . (i.e doctor, therapist, psychologist). To reach this goal will require a great deal of education and I am more then willing to pursue it. First I will need to complete my general education. I wish to transfer to state. For me to transfer I will need to perform exceptionally well in my classes. For me to accomplish these goals I will need to work on my time management. I need to organize my time so that I have room for unexpected events. If I can pull through with that it would greatly improve my homework and lower my anxiety. In my opinion one of the most important things I need learn is to say no. sometimes it would be wiser for me to stay home and study, instead of go out with friends. Of course I don’t want to neglect them all together. A good way to keep myself motivated is to reward myself with spending more times with friends. If I get my homework done and don’t procrastinate then we could all spend our weekend together. I think that is an important method for me to apply to my life.

  14. I have a degree already and once I got the first one I noticed that it gave me momentum to obtain a second one. The first one was definitely the hardest because I was right out of high school and I had a boyfriend who didn't want to go to school so that ended really fast. I knew what I wanted and wasn't going to let anyone get in my way, plus the first two years you take general education type of classes which I felt as if I was right back in college. It wasn't until my junior and senior year that I actually enjoyed attending college because I was studying something I actually wanted to learn so hang in there. I love to learn so school for me is not as difficult as it may be for others. I do though have to get back into the routine of setting time to study, focusing, allowing time for myself especially if I am stuck on homework etc. because one can only do so much. I have learned not to be so hard on myself and to take it one day at a time.

Having a routine is good too, it helps to organize your time and focus on school work when you have certain time set aside so you won't get distracted with something else.

  15. As of right now, my career goal in the future is to obtain my general education at Cuyamaca. Because they do not provide all the classes needed to become a physical therapist assistant, I am going to have to transfer to San Diego Mesa college and finish the classes I need to obtain my associates in science as a therapist assistant. While I work as a PT assistant, I plan on taking a break from school, and when I am ready, my goal is to go back and obtain a business bachelors degree. I know it will take time and patience, but it will all be worth it in the end. One way that will help me achieve my goal is to simply make time for all my school work and studies, and all of my work hours as well. As others said as well, rewarding myself is a great way to motivate myself. Starting and finishing all my important work first gives me the rest of the day to not only relax but to spend time with family and friends which in my opinion is the best reward I can receive.

  16. One of my lifetime goals is to graduate at grossmont college with a degree in social and behavioral science. I plan on spending my time wisely accomplishing this goal by making sure that priority things are done before doing something that is a time waster. I plan to use my time wisely by taking a full time schedule as a college student rather than part time so I can get my degree quicker. I want to make sure I pass all of my classes so I don't have to take them all over again which would waste a lot of time.

The most important thing as you said is passing all the courses to not waste time; however, it is better to pass your courses with high grades. As you know universities ask for specific GPA for each major, so I encourage you to decide on the university you want to go to and ask for the GPA the want for your major so you can work on your grades. Good luck my friend.

    2. FIrst, congratualtions on seeking a path and knowing where you want to go. I agree with you that mmaking priorities will help you get things done. I know that trying to get a full schedule seems like a great thing to do, but just be careful not to overwhelm yourself too much with so many clases. Of course it all depends on your classes, but taking a full schedule of hard courses may cause you to distribute your time too much. By that I mean that you won't have time to focus on any particualr one in general if you need to. Good luck on your career.

  17. One of my life time goals is to be a pharmacist. I know it is not an easy process to go through, but I will be able to do it by using some tactics. The first tactic is managing time. I manage time between school and my family be scheduling everything I have to do. As a member of a family I have some duties to fulfill just like taking care of bills due dates. I also make a list of the assignments I have for the week and I work on them one by one. Sometimes I have more than three of four things to do in one day so the night before when I go to my bed I think about the second day and I arrange my duties from the most important to the least one.

My goal requires me to manage my life time between family, friends, and school. I cant waste time through this journey neither can i waste money. Working to make money and save it for university education is another important task that i need to manage responsibly. Important and good degrees require long years of studying, and managing time is a major thing that leads to success. Waking up early every day, having a healthy breakfast, do some exercises, then studying for hours, and taking breaks every once in a while, then going to bed early is a perfect program to be successful and achieving any goal.

  23. One of my lifeteime goals is to finish school with a degree in Nursing as well. I am like most older students, going to school and going to work at the same time. I too have the most common obstacle as most of you stated earlier, procrastination. I often find my self waiting until the day of my assignment to start it. I may need to develop better studying habits, as well as get better at allocating time during the week to complete my school work. In order to get to that goal, I need to stay focused on the end result, instead of seeing the challenges now.

Nursing is also a great career choice. Working in the medical field means that there is a big chance you'll almost always be employed. I think procrastination gets all of us every once in the while but we have to remember to stay on track. By staying on track we are ensuring our grade and the best possible outcome for the semester. None of us want to end up studying last minute and not do well as a result. Just don't be to hard on yourself but keep yourself focused.

  25. Other than to graduate and have my degree, my lifetime goal is to maintain independence. A lot of women get married and feel as if they have to listen or be 'controlled' by their spouse. I feel as if that is wrong. No woman should feel the need to go along with what a man says. I really am a big believer of women independence and that women should feel the need to love themselves and know their worth. My goal is that one day my life story can help others be that strong woman i strive to be. I want to be that example that everyone looks at one day as a strong independent woman. Of course if i get married, that is a partnership but i want to be taken seriously in any decision. It's very important that we voice ourselves and take a stand for ourselves because no one else will. My goal is to one day show women that it's important to be individuals and stand for ourselves. In many jobs women are not payed as much as men and i want to be the person who comes out and takes a stand for this. I believe it's an important goal and that one day i will reach it. I strongly believe in rights and its important to know them to enforce them. That is my goal, as long and tire-some as it sounds i believe i can reach it.

My goal is to be able to juggle wife life and mommy life along with my job and schooling or whatever else i'd like to accomplish. I know I can reach my goal, its going to take a lot on both mine and my partners part to be able to deal with children, work, school, and life outside of all of that but were a strong couple and we can do it.

My lifetime goal is to receive my Bachelor degree in Graphic Design, integrate my knowledge to my existing company, and be successful. Because I have three children in college, and one of the is going to graduate as Web designer and the other as an Architect, my plan is that I will transform my own company as a family business, with a lot to offer and have a good future together. My plan is to work with them for few years until the company is stable and I do want to retire, and transfer my business to them under my supervision. After that, other of my lifetime goals is that I want to travel around the world, enjoy more time with my family and buy a house next to the ocean. I had establishing this goals for my life and I am planning to accomplish them, because even has been long time ago that I graduated from High school, pursuing this dreams give me a mean of life.
