  1. This semester is going really well for me. I’m taking 12 units at Cuyamaca College. I was afraid at first because I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. I work full time and have a really hard time fitting homework and study time into my schedule. But luckily I’ve been maintaining. I enrolled to get an education so I can finish up my general education and transfer to get a professional degree. I feel like working full time and going to school full time is a big roadblock. I enrolled to be a full time student so I can finish up really quickly. It’s a big challenge I face but I know an education is worth more than anything else in the world. School can get you far in life. Working can be a big distraction when you’re studying. I feel people shouldn’t have to work while getting an education, but unfortunately people need to work to survive and pay the bills. I’ve really considered cutting my job into part time because it’s just too much on my plate. I know an education is key to success and I need to really need to finish up and think and plan my life for the future.

  2. I always tell a friend to keep calm, cool, and collective when getting interviewed for a job. Always look presentable and have good hygiene. Make sure you follow instructions and pay attention to detail. Always be honest, concise, and clear. I believe organizations look for these values while interviewing you. You must be on your “A” game because if a company is going to invest time and money into you, you must prove to them that you’re the best candidate for the job. Have a great attitude and make sure your honest about everything and with good faith, you’ll get the job no problem.

This semester so far is going awesome for me. The reasoning is because I’m enjoying this course more than I thought I would. At first, I thought that this would be a difficult challenge and I wouldn’t be able to maintain this class being my situation, incarceration. The challenges I’m facing that has to do with school would be that I have limited access to the computers so I’m not always able to do my school work whenever I chose. For example, if there was a assignment due tomorrow and I wouldn’t have access to the computers that day I would email my professor and ask for a extended day or so. I overcame and faced these obstacles by handling business and doing what I had to do in order to finish and or complete the assignments

  4. What tips would you give to a friend before he or she interviewed for a job that was really important?
The tip I would give a friend before he or she interviewed for a job that was really important would be letting her know that the first 7 seconds is the most important thing when interviewing. It shows who you are, and I learned that through taking my work readiness class . Next, your body posture and the way you speak is also important. You wouldn’t want to go into a interview and say “ Hey was sup I need a job so hook me up “ NO! you would want to say something like “ Good Morning Mr. Robles(Fake Name for Example) my name is Chantel Jones ( Your Name) and I’m here for my ten o’clock interview. “ When in a interview you should tell the interviewer a little bit about yourself but don’t expose too much just enough to get the interviewer thinking because you would want your interview to stand out and the interviewer to remember you. So that he or she doesn’t say well what’s the difference between this interview and the last one. I learned that through experience.

  5. I was born in 1994, so I come from the New Millennial generation. I thought it was actually funny how they said in the textbook that people from my generation are called the clickeratti and here I am behind a computer typing away. Being from the New Millennial age comes with many disadvantages along with new advantages. Technology has put many little jobs out of business and is slowly doing so more and more. Such as there not being anymore Blockbusters to have as a part time job because Red Boxes have put them out of business. But at the same time technology has made it easier for me to go to school, such as taking online classes. The internet itself has created endless opportunities for me to research jobs, vacation, other schools, and classes. This has been very helpful for me in getting into school and learning about what I want to do with my life. Technology even showed me this class which is a huge help in my self discovery and making life decisions that are very important to basically everything that has to do with me and my future. I am very grateful for the technology I posses today and plan on using it in my advantage for a vast variety of thing.

    1. Kellen,
I would have to agree with you about the technology that's being used now a days is way different than before. Its amazing what all computers and smart phones can do now.

      Delete
    2. It's just amazing that the first computers ever used were the size of a large room and now we are walking around with them in our hands. Crazy how far we've come in such a relatively short period of time.

    3. I agree with you all; Kellen, Chantel and Brittney. Using technology, for me, even coming from the way late 80's, is still a challenging adjustment. I saw the shift, as computers came on the scene, and now are forever here to stay. Accessibility of information is a pertinent technological advance in humanity. It is mind boggling to think what the next generation will do with technology. Any one seen Star Wars? Totally kidding, sort of. Just imagine the possibilities!

  6. This semester is going pretty well for me. I am keeping up with all of my classes and have all good grades so far. By going back to school I have noticed that my vocabulary and organization has been exceptional; as well as my focus and control of what I am doing and where I want to go in life. I am planning on getting my AA in psychology and am excited to put my life back together and work towards a career that will bring me financial stability and enjoy the work that I do. Although financially; I am still having troubles, I am a very capable and determined person and can make the best out of everything and can survive most everything. This class in particular, has given me a chance to really reevaluate myself and assess the morals and values that I hold most important in my life; by taking the assessments we are assigned seriously and personally. I have found that over the years I have kind of lost myself a little and have not been holding myself up to the high standards that I always should have been. Now that I am in school I have been more aware of myself as an individual, the skills I have obtained throughout the years and the opportunities in my career and personal life that are now closer than ever. I plan to continue to do my best to reach my goals and tackle all of the obstacles; that I am sure, will come my way. Staying positive, grounded and persevering through experiences that can completely crush you if you let them, is the only way to keep moving forward and is what I plan to do in order to achieve my personal idea of success and find my lasting true happiness that I can share with my loved ones. I Hope the best for all this semester and what ever your ventures may be!

    1. Brittney, by reading your post I think you’re doing great so far. It really is important for you to go to school and get an education. I think it will definitely provide you with a successful career and financial stability. It is great to hear that you know you can meet high standards and I’m sure you are capable of doing whatever it is you want to do in your career. It is important for you to stay positive and keep pushing yourself to move forward. I think you can do it! Good luck this semester and in your future! And keep up the good work!

      Delete
    2. Way to go Brittney! School can definitely help you but don't dismiss the losing yourself as something that you have wasted because you probably wouldn't be where you are now if you didn't lose yourself. The key point here is that focusing on the future is a great way to get through school and all of obstacles that life may bring us. Keep at it and you can achieve anything you set your mind to just remember baby steps and don't be too hard on yourself.

  7. My generation is the New Millennial and I think that the availability of careers in the future will be limited because my generation is so large. And right now in the present I see how full classes are and how it's difficult for some people to find part time jobs because most jobs have already been taken. I feel like it's going to affect my future career choice because I might have to steer towards the career that will be available and helpful for the future.

    1. Zoe, I agree to your thoughts as well. In my opinion I feel like San Diego is becoming overpopulated with the people coming into the state. Not that I have anything against them, but like you said careers in the future may be limited to to the size of the generation. Its very hard to get into the classes you want nowadays because they become full very quickly, and it affects us because we want to take the classes and move on with our future and finish our schooling quick, but because of this problem it is going to extend the semesters and years of us attending college. It stated in chapter 5 that by 2020 there will be 5.7 million more jobs, and I think that's a great thing, but it does not really give us a better chance because then our population will grow even more.

      Delete
    2. Zoe and Catherine, you both bring forth amazing points. Our generation is large, and as the chapter divulged we learned that it is way bigger than the baby boomers. Populations unchecked; in any animal, in its natural state of wild, will flourish until it reaches an equilibrium. The human race, all over the world is in different states of population equilibrium. San Diego is ever expanding and has not reached that point. Especially as more and more people want to come here to live. Can you blame them?

  8. A road block i'm facing this semester is studying for quiz's and tests. Because i'm sort of used to getting study sheets and practice reviews I sometimes have a little trouble knowing what to study and what to expect on the test. I know one way to study is to write out definitions and main points and for math write out the equations. I know it also matters how much time I spend reviewing the materiel. I use the practice quiz's as an opportunity to take a shot and then revise what I get wrong.

    1. Zoe, I recently have had a similar issue with a class. The information is hard, but without a study guide, the information is harder to funnel into categories of importance. I had to e-mail my teacher, and calmly explain my position, in a professional way. I haven't heard a reply yet, but I am hoping it is positive. Maybe if it gets too overwhelming it could be time to approach the issue and find a better solution. Good luck!

  9. What tips would I give a friend before an interview? I would first start out by making sure they have a updated and honest resume. This will impact the interview in your favor. Keep eye contact with the interviewer and shake their hand firmly in the beginning of the interview and the end of the interview. If you have any information on the company try and study up on them so you can incorporate the statistics and facts you have learned about their company. Also answer all of the questions honestly and do not try and guess answers so that you may not lose your edge.

  10. During my first semester of college I decided to start out easy by taking two classes, one at school and one online. Second semester I took an extra class making it 3, two are online and one is on campus. The class I am taking on campus is history 108. I have never enjoyed taking this subject; I always had trouble with it, mostly because I do not enjoy the class and when I don’t enjoy the class I tend to not pay much attention in it. Especially the fact that we have to write our notes while the instructor is lecturing. It’s not like high school when it’s all written out for you. Studying for its exams stress me out a lot because it’s a lot of information to take in and remember. What makes it more complicated is not having a good instructor, but I learned to cope with them and attend class and try my best. Another challenge for me is that I do not know what career I want to pursue in yet, which brought me here, taking this online class. This online class has helped me a lot, especially the big assignments that we have to do. This class narrowed down the options I have with the careers that matched my personality, which makes it easier on me. I can deal with this situation by simply doing the work and big assignments because this class made to help the students to decide what they want to major in. The assignment coming up, which is my educational plan, is going to help me a lot as well because it takes us to the counselor which is very helpful because they can help us by making a plan of what classes to take for the certain major.

  12. If I had a friend interviewing for a job I would give advice on a few different areas. While going to an interview the first thing you need to do is dress nice in order to look professional. When you shake someones hand use a firm grip to show strength, but not too hard to where you hurt them! All interviews share same basic questions like why you want to work there and what are your strengths and weaknesses. These types of questions should be anticipated and answers should be prepared ahead of time. For the resume, include a cover letter telling a little background about yourself. In the resume you should keep things simple and easy to read. List your educational background and work experience. If you have no work experience you can include classes you've taken or other skills you have to show them the qualities you possess. You need to appear confident and qualified so the person interviewing you sees that you are a good candidate for the job. It is a good idea to do research about the company before hand to show that you have interest in the company. You can also ask questions about the company to the person interviewing you , but make sure to do it at an appropriate time.

    1. I agree Michael. It is important to be prepared for the interview so you you feel confident and a bit more relaxed when going in for your interview. Remember to look very professional is very important as well. I like how you said that if you do not have any work experience to write down classes you have taken and skills you have learned from them. I think it is also important to write down any volunteer experience you have had with your community because that shows you like to participate and help people and places out. My sister when she had an interview for Sharp Chula Vista to become an RN did some research on the hospital and found some good concrete details about the hospitals background and now she is working there for about two years now, which is awesome!

  13. This semester was my challenges for three reasons; first because I took two math classes linear algebra, discrete mathematics, and both need at least two hours each day. Actually the discrete mathematics was the hardest one because it is like logic and without tools. Second, English 124 also there are lot works needs to finish each week. Third, and is the important thing my family needs me a lot and take most of my time. Really I am working overload, homework, study, my family, and work. Also my youngest son needs each day about three hours to finish his homework, and need help because he is in special education program. Like we are migrants to this country it hard to find jobs to live, and roadblock, how balance between studies and live like human it is really hard to me. I do not have any idea to deal with them. Last week I receive email from SDSU that it accepts me to fall 2013 and I am stuck I need to get my bachelor’s degree on other hand I need works to survive, it hard to me to choose one of them, but I think I do not have any chose the work and my family came first.

  14. This semester has been something different for me. I am taking night classes which i have never done before. I have Statistics class from 5:30- 6:45 pm Monday and Wednesday and i have an English class that goes from 7-10 pm only on Wednesdays. This has been a big challenge for me because I am used to going to work and being able to go home after. This semester i have to go to work and straight to class. It is so hard for me sometimes because my body is tired. I Work with kids all day long so they take a lot of energy from me, so when i got to class i am very exhausted. I have been able to get through it and i have been doing good in both of my classes. I am taking 15 units so i have been extremely busy with all of my work . I work and volunteer too so i have to manage my time well.

  15. This semester is my third semester in Cuyamaca College and I am taking fifteen units. In the last two semesters I was taking twelve units in total. This semester is different than before because I am taking fifteen units beside short term English courses. I have regular English 109 and English 120. I still have two weeks to be done with the English 109; so far I am doing really good my grades are all A+. I also have math 110 and the counseling courses. The problem is that I am not working now but I applied for working in Macy’s and they emailed me saying that they accept my application. I have an interview on Wednesday the 13th now I do not know what will happen. I haven’t work before, I mean never ever before. I don’t know how I am going to do in school if I will work. I want to keep my grades high as usual. When applied for the job I mentioned that I am a college student and I can work as a part time worker only, so I think they will take this into consideration.

Hi Tamara, I understand how do you feel about going to college and work. I was in the same situation, and what I can recommend to you, is to schedule your classes two days a week, this will give your five days free to organize your working time and homework. If you plan to work part time, this will be hard at first until you organize your new schedule. I do not recommend to you working full time while you are in college, because this will take tool on your time, health and your grades. Focus on your goals and never gave up.

  16. This semester for me is dragging by. I really would rather not be doing GE. I find it hard to keep myself motivated in boring classes or to make myself sit down and actually do the homework. I know these classes are necessary for me to continue on with the medical career I want to have but it makes it difficult. Im pulling good grades in my classes but I cant spark an interest in them. The one class I do really like is Political Science. Im trying just to get the work done and get through it at best of a pace as I can. I really dont wanna be stuck here longer than I have to be.

  17. Some tips for a friend before an important job interview. First I would say make sure you have a good clean out fit and look presentable. Also do research before your interview about the position you want and company. Always bring your own pen and a notepad to the interview. Always bring your resume. This makes you look professional and polished. Greet your interviewer with eye contact and a good hand shake. Display confidence in presenting yourself. Take initiative and make yourself look professional and valuable. Talk well and dont use slang and try to avoid Um's and Like.

  18. I am doing fine this semester. I am taking fourteen units, five for ESL 106, six from math 96 and three from this counseling class. My three classes are a challenge: for ESL106 is the Essays, because those are the base of this class and every aspect is evaluated. Even though, I have been improving my grammar and sentence structure, I am still struggling. My other challenge is math 96, because is a new program most related with statistics then algebra. And my third one is this class, where I find my is challenge to meet the deadlines, specially the last 3 weeks, but I pretty sure I will return on track very soon.I know that I am struggling more, because I do not have any art or gd class where I can apply my imagination or creativity either on paper or in the computer. Next semester I will try to look for more combined classes and not only GE.

  19. Make a comment about how this semester is going for you. Are you facing any challenges or roadblocks? How can you deal with them?

This semester in college is going really well for me. I am a student at Cuyamaca College as well as San Diego State University. Balancing my time between both schools, and work, has been somewhat of a struggle but so far I’m doing pretty well. It has been helpful to take this online course because it gives me the flexibility to complete my work on my own time. I currently have pretty good grades in all of my classes. I try to balance my time by making a schedule of what I have for the week and when I will be able to complete my work. Being at either school or work six days a week is kind of my only roadblock but I have learned how to use my time wisely. I know what I need to get done and I try my best to prioritize. Although I have so much going on, I still make time for friends and having a social life. I know my workload is a lot right now but I really think it is the best thing for be because it is helping me to be more responsible and it is preparing me for my future.

  20. This semester I am taking 16 units. I have two English courses, psychology, philosophy and this class. Time management has been tough. If I take a day to only enjoy R&R I can easily fall behind on my schedule and become pressed for time for the rest of the week. odd enough I cant help but like keeping my mind occupied with my studies. It is hard enough to balance a multiple classes I also have been trying to find time to take care of my health and other responsibilities. So far my plan is not to jump form one assignment to the next without finishing the last one. I focus completely on the next due assignment and after its don I move on to the next one. This plan has been working well for me because its practicality. one thing I learned this semester is how much faster you can work when you have no distractions.

  21. I found the employment trends very interesting. I noticed that the increase in research and development in biology and the increase in health care to be very exciting because it is fields like those that I find to be fascinating and fulfilling careers. One thing I am concerned about is the emphasis in technology. As much as I respect technology and happy with how easy it has made things for us I dislike how fast in changes. It always seems like when I think I understand how something works it is now obsolete and has been replaced. My dislike for its change mostly comes from how long it takes me to learn a new piece of technology. This will affect my future because I will need to learn a lot more about how technology works since society is becoming more technologically savvy.

  22. This semester is going well for me. I’m enjoying my classes but can’t wait to be done with the GE classes. A challenge I am facing this semester is time management. Last week one of my classes ended and I didn’t budget my time very well between studying for the final and keeping up with my homework with my other classes. Thankfully I finished everything, but just not in the way I would have wanted to. I tend to work better under pressure and I can work fast when I’m under pressure. The downside to working on things last minute is the stress that comes along. Even though I should be enjoying my classes I find myself just waiting for the semester to be over. A few ways I deal with the stress and pressure I put on myself by procrastinating and not managing my time is by attempting to schedule my days better. With work and school my days seem to always fly by me and next thing I know the assignment I due in a few hours. By slowly getting used to scheduling my time better I am actually having less stress and having more time to do my assignments.

  23. What tips would you give to a friend before he or she interviewed for a job that was really important?

If a hypothetical friend, named Ashley, was being interviewed for a job, one important tip I would tell her is to first research the company she is interviewing for. Knowing the values and mission behind the company can help Ashley develop a connection with the company and also use this information to answer the questions the employers ask. Another tip is to make a good impression. Ashley should go in the interview dressing professionally, make eye contact, and smile. Another important tip is to come prepared with questions about the job and company. It looks good and it shows the employer that you are interested in the company. The questions will help start a dialogue and possibly a good conversation between Ashley and the employers. Practicing interview questions and answers can also be helpful. I would offer Ashley to practice with her and do some mock interviews. There are some questions that are commonly asked by employers. A technique I use to help me formulate my answers is to understand my knowledge, attitude, and skills. Knowing my strengths and weaknesses within these fields give me a better understanding of what I can contribute to the company and what things I still need to learn.

  24. The generation I was born into is generation x. I was born in 1991 so I was a 90's kid. My generation will affect my future career choices by giving me more options for careers to choose from because of all the oppurtunities that have came into this world because of science and technology. The internet took off in the late 90's which created a whole new way to do business and changed the way of life. I can now choose from multiple careers that have to deal with just computers and the internet alone. Another form of technology that could help me have a career in are video games. They had video games for other generations but now is the time where the games are becoming so realistic. Another area that has expanded a lot in this generation is science. There are so many areas where achievements are being made and cures for diseases are still trying to be solved. My generation can also have an affect my career options because of the massive amount of debt that this country is in which could limit the economy or the classes I would need to take to take a career further.

    1. When you wrote about science and technology it very much sounded like what i was explaining. I completely agree that it has become huge and can expand for the nation. It has changed the way of life and how we go about our day. Even though video games are a small portion of what can help the future it is beneficial to you which allows you employed. Great! This country has an ENROMOUS amount of debit and while progressing we can figure all of this out (the debit problem) and live without huge debate on who should pay more or less.

  25. What is your generation? Baby Boomer? Generation X? New Millennial? How will your generation affect your future career choices?

My generation is the Millennial generation which is also called Generation Y. I believe that in my college scope work i mentioned i was a different generation by accident. I think that my generation will play one of the biggest roles in the world. We are so invested in our technology that it has become our life. We use it everyday from alarm clocks, to reminding ourselves things, or more importantly to help us communicate with the world. It literally has taken over us and we should learn how to use it positively. We can fix disputes a lot faster with say, politicains from china while communicating via skype (or whatever it is). We can create more jobs. With the increasing need of techonology we need people to make it. This can allow our future economy to become stronger. Finally we can help cure diseases that we never thought that we could cure. Cancer has been a growing disease killing millions every year. With the right technology and mind we are able to improve our genetic engineering field. What many don't know is that by doing this we can save the lives of people all around the world who are fighting hard every single day. My generation in the future will have to utilize what we have and GROW from there allowing a large expansion of technology not only in America but around the entire world. This can change how we might live our day to day lives in an amazing way.

    1. I am in the same generation. I think that you are spot on with the statements on technology as well as cancer. We have business dealings in China and we use Skype to get in touch as well as be able to see products as they are finishing them. I hope that we can find a real cure for cancer. So many people die from this and it feels like with all of the technology out there we should be able to find a cure.

  26. What tips would I give a friend before an interview? I would first start by making sure that your resume fits the position you are applying for. I will tell you that making a first impression should have an impression so dress sharp, be there on time and keep your answers short and precise. I would also have you do research on the company you are interviewing at and make the interviewer feel as if you already work there. When asked a question of how would you handle say an angry client, relate it or give it a story type of answer because people love to hear stories and they will remember that versus and cut and dry answer. Lastly remember that they are there to sell their company as well so it is a win win situation. Think of yourself as an asset and they are just there to see if you are a good fit but don't forget that you need to make sure it is a good fit for you as well.

I have diverse classes, but they’re not all really challenging. I’m having some hard time managing my schedule for my week because I’m very busy. The only challenges that I am facing is with the amount of sleep that I’m having since I’m getting tired and sleepy very quickly. I’m trying my best to get enough amount of sleep, rest, and refresh. What helps the most to get better and feel more energetic and excited to study is going shopping

  28. If my friend would be applying for an important job, my most important highlights would be to tell him/her to be very careful when thinking about the questions being asked, give honest answers for the questions. Also tell all the jobs acquired before, list the experiences, degrees and any other educational documents received. I would also recommend my friend to be honest and tell his/her illnesses if he/she had any that need to be mentioned in the record. Furthermore, I would tell my friend to wear a chic suit, look very clean, smell really good because these are important elements that show different sides of my friend. Moreover, being very polite is also very important

My issue is that I have school on Monday and Wednesday from 9am to 8pm so when I get home I am tired so I do not do homework then on Tuesday and Thursday I work on my three other main classes. and push this one back because of it is not a brick and mortar class. I know that is not logical which is my problem. On friday saturday and sunday I am at work and I do try to do as much there as possible but i usually am not able to. For example tonight I had to stay an hour overtime and did not get home till almost 10. So now i am rushing to get things done. so I am trying to find more time in the week.

In both of my courses, I am facing a few roadblocks which include the challenge of procrastination, the challenge of not knowing how to properly express my ideas fully. For example, in my English course, I constantly fight the urge to not go to class because it is so early on a Friday. I am trying to fight this by encouraging myself to look at the end result. The end result that I see is that I will become a better writer at the end of the semester. In terms of this counseling course, one of the challenges for this course has become overcome procrastination. I often find myself waiting a day or two before my assignments are due to take a look at what they require from me. I am trying to fight this by trying to look ahead at the beginning of the week, so that I am fully aware of how much time the assignments will take. I am trying to better prepare myself by completing some of the work every single day to make it easier in the end.

  31. Make a comment about how this semester is going for you. Are you facing any challenges or roadblocks? How can you deal with them?

This semester has been a little tough for me since I am taking 19 units. It is a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. I am trying my best to break up my time proportionally to complete all tasks. The challenge I am experiencing is finding time to study for each course. I find myself studying for each course, but not enough. I am trying to deal with this challenge by cutting down my leisure time, and concentrating even more on school. It's been tough so far, but I am confident I can do it.

What tips would you give to a friend before he or she interviewed for a job that was really important?

I would advice a friend to bring along a strong resume. The resume should be about one page in length and be an overview of his/her educational and work experience. I would also recommend him/her to wear something professional and something not too colorful. A powerful handshake along with a big smile is important.

  32. This semester was working well for me. I had high hopes, I signed up for 4 classes online while I was 9 months pregnant about to pop. I was doing great, logging in to all the classes every day, getting ahead in my work so that I wouldn't be behind once I had my daughter. Then I had her and everything changed, there was no longer that free time I had to do classwork every day and to make sure everything was completed and in on time. Suddenly I was regretting enrolling in 4 classes. Luckily my teachers were all really supportive for the most part and letting me turn things in late for full credit. Now I think its going good again, I've gotten the swing of being a new mommy and doing school. So now this semester is back on track and going great again, but that was a big obstacle I am glad I overcame before it was to late.
