Chapter 3, Learning Style and Intelligence, Feb 18-24

Remember to make 2 postings of at least 100 words each this week. You can comment on these scenarios using what you have read about learning styles and personality type, reply to other student's comments or write about anything related to college and career success.

1. You have just been assigned a 10 page term paper.
2. You have to study for a challenging math test.
3. You have to write up a lab report for a biology class. It includes drawing of a frog you have just dissected.
4. You are taking a required course for your major and it is taught by only one professor. You dislike this professor.
5. You are taking a business class and have been assigned a group project to design a small business. It is worth 50% of your grade. One of the group members wants to control the group and the others seem to be rebelling.
6. You have signed up for an economics course and find it difficult to stay awake during the lecture.
7. You signed up for a philosophy course to meet a humanities requirement. The vocabulary in the course is unfamiliar.
8. As part of the final exam, you have to prepare a five minute presentation for your art history class.

  1. If I was just assigned a 10 page term paper, knowing my personality type I would start by reading what the topic is on. I would then start gathering the information on what the topic is about. I am a judger, which means I am organized and do not like to put things off so I would be started on it the day I got it. I would start a outline including my thoughts and the relevant information. I would conduct an interviews, or look into any other materials that may be outside my text book. I would then have everything ready to get the paper typed up, proof read, make any changes and have it ready 2-3 days before it is due so that I make sure I have no issues printing or any other malfunction that could cause the paper not to be or turned in late.

    1. Hi Lanae,
That is a very good strategy in producing a 10 page term paper. I am actually more of a perceiver type of person, but when it comes to projects like this I would go about it the same way that you would. I like to keep my options open and look for all opportunities to make my projects and assignments the best that they can be, so I would give myself enough time so that I can be organized enough to produce a good term paper. Plus, there is always some kind of problem with my computer, so I have to account for the possibility of my computer acting up as well. Good organization and planning usually brings a successful product.

    2. Hi Lanae and Brittney ,I agree with you both. You have done a fabulous job lanae. I’m also a judger myself, and would go about this assignment in a similar way. I am also organized and tend to like things done right away, especially if its topic that I enjoy. Sometimes I even over prepare, and then need to edit. According to my personality type I like to be prepared to meet all of my deadlines. But sometimes I focus too much on the details rather than the final product. For example, you both talked about computer problems, sometimes I have fixated too much on printer issues and wasted time.

  2. We enroll into college to get an education, not make friends with the professor. They are there to teach, and we are there to learn. We must focus on the subject, especially if it’s for your major. In life we all don’t get what we always want. But you want a degree for your major. You should walk into that class prepared to take notes and listen to the lecture. Always have a good attitude while you’re studying in school. We all enroll into college because we need to figure out what we want to do for our career. Make the instructor your friend because someday you might need them for the class or your career.

    1. I think you bring up a lot of good points. It seems that more and more people think that life should be easy and if you don't like something you can and should quit it. I think that this situation helps you in the real world. You always have the chance to not get along with your boss. I think that in college it is a tad bit easier because you do not have a lot of interaction with your professors. I think unless they are truly unfair and there is a need to change to another professor you should suck it up and remember that in life you have to get along with people from all walks of life and you can use this time to learn how to be successful in this avenue.

  3. If I was enrolled in a class that was required for my major but I did not like the professor or their teaching style and could not change the class, I would just relax, take a deep breath and deal with it. We deal with difficult people and people who see things different than we do, everyday. Although I may not see eye to eye with the professor, they are there to teach. So having an open mind and trying to relate in some way to the professor could help. The most important factor in it all, is the material that needs to be learned. I would use my learning style to complete the assignments needed in order to earn my degree. I would keep in mind my motivations to continue school; which are gaining knowledge and experience in order to build a career that I enjoy and be financially stable as well as emotionally fulfilled. My learning style requires me to use personal relations to subjects in order to keep my interest and focus. It may be a little bit more difficult to grasp the information being taught by a professor you do not necessarily agree with, but when you use your own learning style and apply it you can overcome your feelings towards the professor and just do what you got to do, for yourself and your future. If we all just quit something we enjoyed doing because another person that we don't like were involved with it as well, that would be weak and restraining yourself from doing something you love just because you can't except they are different and doing there own thing as well. Except it and keep moving forward. Sometimes you need to block certain things and people out in order to keep your goal in view.

    1. I have not been in that situation yet but I feel you are exactly right in your way would handle it. We will not always agree on everything that someone else does but when it comes to education especially from the student perspective you are there to get all the information you can. Even if you feel the professor is wrong or not teaching in a way that’s best for you, you must pay attention and take away as much as you can from it. If you still feel behind then just spend time on your own reading material on the subject. Always keep in mind that you are doing this for a reason and the reason is YOUR FUTURE.

  4. If there was a big math test coming up that I had to take I would start out by doing all of my homework to get a feel for the material. I am a good note taker and know what I do and don't need to write down 90% of the time. If there where certain subjects I struggled at on my homework I would flip back through my notes to help me. Now whether I understood the information or not, I would go to the math center at school at least 45 minutes before class and discuss the material with either other students or tutors there.

    1. Kellen, I like that you mention that you will go to the math center. That is something not all the students take advantage. We have many resources to be successful and Have not been explored. I agree with you, that doing homework is the best way to figure what are the most challenging chapters and start to pay more attention and get help from the teacher, tutors or friends.

  5. If I had to prepare to take a major math test i'd go over all the homework for the lesson, also do any review work that might be available for the test. Another tactic to use is to write out the important equations or tricks on a note card and study them. Or even look up extra problems that you can get extra practice for the test. It's important to fully understand the lessons and material so that you can apply it and succeed with it.

  6. If I was taking a course where I disliked the professor i'd try to focus on what's really important and that is to succeed in the class. From the lesson it said that accepting and understanding the teacher's teaching style can help you agree with them. I've had teachers in the past that I didn't like, for example my junior year English teacher was mean in my opinion and I tried my best to ignore that and get all my work done so that there wouldn't be any problems with him. It worked out the best it could have I think.

    1. I like how you mentioned that quote from the lesson. I also thought that was a very interesting way of looking at learning styles, because or teachers learn too. Everyone has a challenging teacher, at least one, in their whole student career. I think you handled the situation appropriately. It is best not to create waves, especially if there is already a storm brewing. Great Post Zoe! I really dig your insight.

  7. I get assigned a 10 page term paper and always take the same steps in completing it. First, I read the topic and directions. An overview on any assignment is important because it lays out the tools for you to build. Stay organized and always have your resources together. Ask questions to the instructor if you are unclear of things, that’s what their there for. Outline what you will be writing about and support all your answers to show you’ve learned. Follow all the requirements for the paper and turn it in on time. Being on time and staying organized will not only help us in college, but also in the real working world. Without that, we won’t make it far in life.

    1. Marlo those are great steps to follow. I think also not procrastinating is one big thing too. To give ourselves enough time to brainstorm and think about what we want to talk about is a very important step to a great ten page paper. I agree with you on the part of being organized. I think it is important because we need to know where things are and where they can be found. Also turning it on time is a good point, in order to get full credit you need to turn in the assignment on time, because if you do a really great paper but turn it in late you get a lot of points marked off.

  8. If I have signed up for an economics course and find it difficult to stay awake during the lecture I would try to figure out a way so that this won’t happen. This is actually happening to me this semester with my English class. The only course that fit my work schedule and school schedule was a night class. I have English every Wednesday nights from seven to ten pm. First of all I am not a night person I don’t usually stay up late and second I come from work than I have math than English. I struggled the first two weeks to stay awake in class because I was starting to get more and more tired. Instead I decided to find a way that I can stay awake. I started bringing food and water or juice so that I can stay awake and that really has been helping me, and now I am fully participating in class instead of yawning and trying to not fall asleep.

    1. I commend your efforts and want to stay awake. English can be dry, but teaches so many important skills. I am also the snacking type. I have chosen to take online classes, and find that I do best when a beverage or something delicious is nearby to motivate my attention. It is also a soothing process to eat or drink, so I can agree with you that it is a great tool. It is also a challenge to switch gears after work. I also have to go from work to a classroom, even though the classroom is my home, it still commands my attention. Keep up the good work, sounds like you are doing well!

  9. If I was taking a required course for my major and it was taught by only one professor, one I disliked I know that we would bump heads. Being that we more than likely would have two different personality types, we probably wouldn’t understand each other and would certainly have different expectations . For example, as a judger I would want my professor to present information in a logical organized fashion but if he or she was not a judger they might in fact present it in a more entertaining way. Personally, this irritates me. To me the professor is not doing his job, but from this class I now realize that he or she is but just in a different style that I would like.

  10. My experience in challenging math test I have a lot thing do before I get an “A” in class. In some semester I was took two different math class so in this semester too. Like we the final will be comprehensive this mean all the chapters. First of all, I read all chapters in my textbook. I will go over all homework. I solve all questions was not in homework, because most of time the instructor choice even or odd question. Then I take rest about five hour. Then I go over all questions in practice exam. I keep trying to solve it sometime I look in my textbook to found smellier question. In end I look what mistake I did in any in correct question. In 8: Pm day before my challenging test I stop studying. I make some fun like watching TV. In end relax, and read all question without any stress answer first the question you know it.

  11. In spring 2009 I started my study in Cuyamaca College so it almost until this moment I took 12 semesters in addition to summer. If I multiple by four classes each semester that mean I took forty class. It is mean forty different professors. One I dislike from all this number, but I don’t have any choice because, he was only one professor teach that class in that semester. The question is why I dislike him? Maybe he don’t like me I do know exactly what was the reason. In the third week he ask use to write argument essay and due was one week after. In time I submit my essay like all student did. What was surprise was I did not receive my grade essay. In the beginning I thought there are some mistakes. In the end of his lecture I go to take with him. When he was saw me ask me to drop the class. I ask him what the reason. His answer was drop or you will fall. I did what he wants, but until this moment I don’t any idea why he dislikes me!

  12. I am an English major, and Math has not always been my friend. If I had to prepare myself for a math test, I would follow a few steps to honor myself and learning type. Firstly, I would devote an hour session at three different times. Instead of working on it all at once and overwhelming myself, I would break it up. Secondly, I would put together a snack and set up a clean and organized area for my self to study. Lastly, I would sit down and focus; working slowly through the problems.

    1. Julia, this is very much the ame way I get through the tough subjects. I hate math. period. So for me its always been hard to bring myself to sit down and study for it and really put my mind to it. I like how you talked about breaking up your study sessions. This always helps for me. I know I can never sit for long periods of time and just have my head in my books like some people can. I also find snacking through studying helps too! Focusing on an empty stomach is nearly impossible. Also your brain does need nutrients and sugars to stay sharp especially when studying. I liked your system and tips a lot. Kudos !

  13. If I have to take a class that is required for my major, and this class is given by one professor only. Let us say I do not like that professor I will probably take the class even if I do not like the teacher because I am a student. Students are humans too and humans do not get what they want always. I will take the course and I will work on myself to enjoy it; actually this happened to me before and when I left that teacher's class she told my next class teacher that I was one her best students

I knew I did not have the time for this extra class but I will try to persevere. I do hope I do well in this class, and I do hope you always do well in yours, you seem to have overcome the odds of succeeding with a teacher that was your opposite. have a great year. :)

  14. If I am going to take math test I will study hard. Actually I like math and I enjoy solving problems; when I decide to study I start with one or two math problems then I go to other subjects. I will study for the test by looking on the problems the teacher solved then I will take two or three examples to work on them without looking on the solution. After mastering the material I will make a list of the rules to review quickly before the test then I will get the tools I need to have like a calculator, ruler, and pens.

As part of the final exam, you have to prepare a five minute presentation for your art history class.
If I have to prepare a 5 minutes presentation, the first thing I will do is,to choose a subject to present, may be some painting, sculpture or famous painter. I will investigate the most relevant about that subject, I would write an outline and develop it. I will make a flashcards with sentences as a guide. I will practice with friends, giving the most relevant information that can fit the 5 minutes requirement. During my presentation, I will use a power point to make it more visual, understandable and in a narrative way to grab the student attention and make it more interesting.

  16. If I had to write a 10 page term paper I know for me there are certain steps I have to take. For me it really helps to break up my time. I have a hard time sitting still so it is a big advantage to me to space out my time and divide it up. I always like to start gathering up all my resources and information and any other references or info I may need. Then I sit down and sort through everything. Basically get an outline or start scratching out an order and ideas for my paper. For me it is basically getting a skeleton of my paper. Next comes putting the meat on the bones. I take it section by section or page my page writing out everything and geting my wording straight and orderly. In these steps I tend to take more frequent breaks because sitting for long amounts of time I know my work gets sloppy and I start to lose focus on my topic. Then after everything is filled in I fine tune and sharpen everything up and do all my spell checks and re reads of my paper before putting the final stamp on it.

I also find it a very good thing that you gather all of the important information that you need for a paper. I like how you also said that you sort through everything and sort everything out based on what information you need. I think these methods that you use are really good methods and I definitely think you will be successful in writing a 10 page term paper. Keep up the good work!

    1. Revan, I agree with your learning technique that goes with the scenario you chose. I also pictured myself in your position to where if I had a class that was mandatory for my major, but the professor was hard to cooperate with, I would also have to put up with his teaching style. Of course I would first check and see if the class was available online as you said or even check at a different college, but if I was left with no choice the only option I would give myself is to basically put up with it and do as you would do, teach myself in my own way if I didn't understand the professor. Another choice would be to find tutors and get one on one help from them. I would also personally talk to the professor after class and let him know if I am having hard time learning his material so that maybe we can negotiate a change.

  18. I have to write up a lab report for biology class. It includes a drawing of a frog that I have just dissected. This would be a great assignment for me. Not so much the part of dissecting the frog but because it meets my two strongest learning styles. I am Tactile, Visual learner. In doing the dissection I will be able to used my hands first off, and whenever I get to use my hands in an assignment it keeps me more focused on the task because I feel like I am discovering or even making more of a difference. The visual part I get from the discretion is one that I will never forget. In this case it may be a little gory. Not to say that its the only reason I am doing it, but it is something other then just reading words out of a book. Anything other then that when comes to learning I find that it fulfills my visual preference. After completing my dissection it will be very easy for me to do my lab write up because as I am reading the questions that I have to answer I once again will be able to visualize the process I did and from that it will make it that much more easier to answer the questions.

  19. I have to study for a challenging math test. I start by gathering all my math papers that i have. Then i will choose a comforting spot to study in, after that i will go over all my notes, and read through my quizzes and test. I will also work on problems that i have hard time solving so that i can be well prepared for such problems on the test. And while studying i try to understand the concepts of the chapter so that i manage to solve anything, and when i understand the main point the task becomes easy and entertaining for me.

  20. I signed up for economics class and I'm finding it difficult to stay awake. So i need to follow a certain method in order to get myself refreshed and energetic. First, I need to organize the reason for being so lazy. Second, i will start solving the problem by organizing me sleeping time, so that i sleep early, and wake up early full of energy. Third, i will take a shower in the morning, then have a healthy breakfast with big orange juice glass next to it. Fourth, i need to start look for interesting points in the material that i like, so that i don't get bored and concentrate the whole time during the lecture.

  21. 2) You have to study for a challenging math test
I have a logical-mathematical personality, which is one main reason why I enjoyed math courses. To tackle this math test, I would first organize what I will and will not be on the test. My usual study technique is creating flash cards because it helps me learn using different learning methods. For example, I can review lecture notes or readings by re-writing them on the flash card. I prefer kinesthetic learning but I am also an auditory learner. I can recite the math problems and formulas out loud. After reviewing my flash cards over a period of time, I can give myself practice problems to test what I learn.

  22. 6) You have signed up for an economics course and find it difficult to stay awake during the lecture
One main reason why I would not be able to stay awake during lecture is the course is not very interesting and it is late in the day. I have been in this situation many times in the past. A major factor is how the instructor presents the material and builds a connection with the class. If an instructor had the personality types of an extravert, feeling, and perceiving, I would most likely be able to stay awake. Some learning techniques I would do are taking notes and highlighting them while in class. I will also try drawing diagrams to help me understand the concepts and connect them to previous points made in lecture. Sitting in the front of class or having a friend, can also help me stay awake in class.

    1. I'm in an economics class this semester and while i don't have trouble staying awake, I do have trouble paying attention. The way my professor teacher is very boring. All he does is show us information and doesn't show us how to use it or why it is important. He allows us to print out the power points before he presents them so I usually don't take notes but perhaps I'll start writing down the more important information to keep my attention. On the other hand, as a sensor I like having the powerpoints printed out for me because I have specific information right in front of me and it makes studying very easy. I like your idea of sitting in front of the class. I think I might try this because it will make me much more engaged in the lecture.

  23. When I was taking math class last semester in college, we would have tests on every chapter like any other math class would. Then we had the final which was always the most challenging test for me. If I had to choose which subjects I do enjoy the most it would be math, and it always has been since middle school. Being the personality type I am, a judger, I am a private person who likes to study by individually or with only one other person. Also I am quite organized when it comes to studying for big exams like this. I kept all my notes and at the end of every chapter was a practice chapter exam. That is also what I would study off of. To be honest, I am not the type that can be sitting and studying hard concentrating on one subject, I have always had difficulty studying for math. I enjoy this subject so much because I simply understand it more then anything else, so it makes it easy for me to look over my notes quickly and refresh my memory with the lessons I learned. When I did run into things that I know I had trouble with I would look into it more on the internet, the text book, and the instructor. I also make a list of all the lessons in the chapter that was difficult for me so I can go back and so that I know what to study. I used an example from experience for this scenario, so overall I basically take note of the things I have difficulty with and after I quickly look over what I do understand to get a glance at the problems, I take more time into studying the things that gave me difficulty. I also look into those problem on the internet, notes, and homework to find the same or similar problems so I know how to work them out step by step.

  24. I have to study to Study for a challenging math test. My first question is "what can I do to study for this math test?" As a introvert I will need a quiet area to study. Best place I can think of is my home during the afternoon when everyone is out of the house. As a sensor I am very fortune because mathematics is something I do well in. A practical way to study would be to use flash cards to memorize the mathematical formulas. As a feeler it will be important for me to make my study environment comfortable. I prefer dim lights so I will need to close the Drapes to make the room darker. As a perceiver I will need to take short breaks once in a while so I don't burn out and just quit.

    1. I am an introvert as well so i do agree when you say it's important to study in a quiet area at home when there isn't too much noise going on. I forgot to mention this in my own short paragraph but i also am a kinetics learner. Flash cards are a great way to make sure that you memorize something. I use it for all different kinds of classes. For math, i always used to write the question on one side and the answer on the other. On the question side i always write down steps or hints that i can remember so when i have to do a similar problem on the actual tests I wont struggle. I don't know about the dim lights part. I prefer bright light so I'm able stay awake.

  25. I have a instructor this semester and he is biggest "judger" personality type I have ever seen. He has everything from the assignments to the syllabus in order. Nothing is unaccounted for. I thought I would have some trouble with this instructor but luckily the class was a philosophy class. As a Perceiver I could not be anymore fortunate. I am able to apply my personality type to this class very well. In this class there is not always a right answer and I need to be open to the possibilities. My strongest type of intelligence is interpersonal and I have no trouble finding a strategy for studying in this class. This philosophy class goes over topics that are very relevant to me and that does well with my intelligence type.

  26. When i have to study for a challenging math test, i always have to go through a certain procedure before i fully understand it. I tend to be a much more auditory learner then visual learner so sometimes i have to go to the teachers office and ask her to explain something to me in a different way. Typically i work by myself on a subject that i struggle on because i tend to be an independent learner. When i begin studying i always make sure I'm organized. I begin going over the first section of the chapter and work past from there. Next, I make sure i understand everything before on the paper move on to the next section. I tend to be a big perfectionist so i always want to finish whatever i started. Finally, when I'm done studying i always go through my papers once again the following morning. I know this might sound like a long process but to me it always works.

I would make sure that I take accurate notes that are organized and that I know will help me study. Finally, I will get into a good learning environment that suits me well. Are there any other ways that you would suggest to someone who need help studying?

  28. Well if I was to study for a difficult math test I would not fret because I am right in my element. I am the logical mathematical mind that des not really have to study for an exam. but for a difficult exam I would make notecards of each of the major formulas or theorems I need to have memorized. I keep all of my thoughts organized in my mind instead of on paper, I rarely ever take notes, which is one of my biggest downfalls.

And I have to say I’m just like you in the fact that I don’t take notes and it kills me when test time comes around and I have to go back and study. Lucky one of my classes has all the lectures where I can just print them out and they are there for me.

  29. I have to write a ten page term paper. I will begin by reading over the instructions the teacher gave me, making sure I understand exactly what I have to write. Next I will begin researching the topic and saving any websites that have valuable information. Now is a good time to make a thesis. I always brainstorm before writing and plan out which topics i will discuss in which part of my paper. I will make sure it all related to my thesis and then start writing. I usually start with the body and then go back and write the introduction and conclusion. When I'm writing I have to take lots of breaks because my mind always goes blank. Clearing my head by doing other activities usually puts me back on track. Once I feel that I am finished I will go back and read my paper, fixing any mistakes and adding information and taking some out where I think its necessary.

  30. If I was assigned a 10 page term paper I would automatically know that it would be worth a large percentage of my grade so I would work really hard on it. Ten pages is a lot of information so I would look online and in books to use as sources for my topic. I would need to make an outline on where and how I'm going to present my information. I would use the standard essay format that starts with an introduction followed by the body of paragraphs and then the conclusion. After writing ten pages I would need to make sure I cite my sources correctly and in proper format.

I would make sure I also had a healthy breakfast and eat specific foods that help your brain. I would also study the problems with other students. I would double check the answers I write down on the test.

    1. Math is the subject I struggle with most, and when I have a challenging math test, I study for hours! I find the test to be simple when I study my heart out, but just paying attention in class is not enough. Eating a full and healthy breakfast is also very important to being successful on a challenging test that requires a lot of brain work. I always double check my answers to guarantee easy points.

  32. If I was taking a required course for Business and it was only taught by only one professor and I did not like him/her then I would put my people skills to work and make the best of it. I can slowly but surely get used to it since I am usually good at dealing with new situations. Even if I disliked the professor I would probably still continue to find ways to ask questions that would allow him/her to explain my questions in a way that makes sense to me. In the end it is the professors job to be there and I have to suck it up and just accept that he/she will be teaching me.

  33. If I signed up for a philosophy course to meet a humanities requirement and the vocabulary in the course is unfamiliar I would first use the technique of writing things on an index card and reading it over so that it would eventually stick. If this did not work, I would try to get into a study group with my classmates so that I could try to get a better understanding.

  34. If I had to write a 10 page paper, I would start by jotting down what the teacher expects in the 10 page paper, the instructor's suggestions, and requirements. I would write down my ideas and thoughts, brainstorm, and research. I would plan out the steps by setting up due dates per page. Timing is very important in being successful to me. I would do everything possible to make the paper interesting, and by doing do, I would have a lot to research and plan ahead.
