Chapter 4, Exploring Interests and Values, Feb 25-Mar 3

Hello Students,
For this week, choose any two topics below.
Comment on a successful decision you have made and how it matched your values.
Comment on an unsuccessful decision you made and how it did not match your values.
Comment on another student's post. Can you add to their comment or raise new questions?
Read the following 2 scenarios and comment on one of them. Based on the individual’s values, give your opinion about what would be the best decision.

Scenario 1: What should be my major?

Shawn is twenty years old and has completed two years of college. He has been trying to decide whether to major in engineering or music. He has completed all of his general education requirements as well as several courses in music, math, and physics. As a child, Shawn was interested in science and dreamed of making new inventions. He always took things apart to see how they worked. Math was always easy for Shawn, and he received awards for achievement in science. He also took part in band throughout his school years and learned to play several instruments. As a teenager, he had a garage band and became so interested in playing the piano that he spent two hours a day practicing. Shawn’s dilemma was that he was becoming stressed out trying to do both majors and
no longer had time to do well in both music and engineering. He also wanted to have time to get a part-time job in order to become more independent. Shawn’s top five values are being independent and living on his own, having a secure future, doing interesting work, achieving something important, and being able to relax. Based on his values, what major should Shawn choose?

Scenario 2: Should Maria continue her education?

Maria is a married mother of two young boys ages five and seven and a part-time college student. Maria and her husband, Juan, are very proud of their Mexican heritage and value their marriage and family. They both think that it is important for Maria to spend time with the children. Maria learned to speak English as a second language and has made sure that her children speak both English and Spanish. While the children are in school, Maria has been attending college part-time with the goal of becoming a teacher’s aide in a class for bilingual children. She has some experience as a teacher’s aide and gets a great deal of satisfaction from helping the children. Juan works in construction, and the family has sacrificed to come up with the money to pay for Maria to attend college. Maria has struggled to earn her associate’s degree and is proud of her accomplishments. She values her education and wants her children to do well in school. Now Maria is considering continuing her education to earn the bachelor’s degree so that she can become a teacher. She would enjoy having her own classroom, loves working with children, and would have a higher income as a teacher than she would as a teacher’s aide. Maria’s husband is concerned that she will spend too much time at college and will not be home for the children. He is also relieved that Maria has finished college and plans to work part-time to supplement the family income while the children are in school. Should Maria continue her education and earn a bachelor’s degree?

  1. Scenario 1: What should be my major?

I think that Shawn needs understand the difference between music and engineering lifestyles. Shawn would need to look inside himself and think, "Which do I want to do first?"
Even if Shawn chooses to major in Engineering; he could still make time for music as a hobby. Based on Shawn's current values, I think it would be best for him to get started pursuing his career in science and math. Even so he should still keep music in his life, because you have to make time for the things you love and are passionate about.

  2. One decision that I have made that has effected my life in a positive way has been the decision to go back to school. I have always been a great student and enjoy learning new skills. I love gaining knowledge and how to understand the world and the people around me. I have had a rough few years and am now getting my life back on track. Going back to school for my AA in psychology has definitely boosted my self-esteem and has allowed me to focus again on the things that are important to me and that will help me in my ventures towards success. I value being determined, persistent and I also value having an education that can be put to use everyday in order to help others while also giving me a sense of fulfillment. I find now find myself getting in touch with the values and skills that I have been putting aside in my life and am now finding myself again and once again putting my all into something that I enjoy and that can help me reach my goals of having a happy and successful life; financially and emotionally secured.

    1. I think anyone who makes the choice to go back to school has a lot of courage. It is so hard to go back to school and get into the routine. I am glad it is going well for you and giving you self esteem. I think it speaks volumes about the person you are for making such a hard and difficult decision to go back. I am sure you will reach all of your goals and have everything you want in your life. Good luck with the rest of the semester.

    2. Thank you Lanae, hope everything goes well with you as well. It's so nice to hear about a mom who loves and cares for her children so much. Good luck with your schooling. Have a great year!

  3. Kudos to you Brittney. It was a hard decision form me to go back to school too. I struggled with it for years. Taking only a few classes at a time and taking classes that were more for entertainment than goal orientation. For two years I went to school part time, while working full time. My job is interesting, and I don't mind what I do. Yet one day, it occurred to me that I couldn't do it forever. I felt like I was cheating myself by not helping the greater good, and over all my interest was in Teaching; not financial services. So I cut my pay in half and doubled the tuition, and and now going to school full time for the first time since 2006. Keep up the good work!

    1. That's awesome Julia. Hope that you have a great time going back to school. We are actually pretty fortunate to be able to have the choice to go back to school, with the resources to help (I'm still waiting for my financial assistance to kick in, but working hard to get it and glad that there is something there at all). Not everybody is able to get this chance. But it is alot of work and it takes a certain kind of determination. Good for you. Good luck on your ventures!~

  4. I think Shawn should choose to major in engineering because he'll create a successful and stable life for himself. And he'll be financially secured and could work at any job he wanted to feel independent. And in his off time he could play music and do the things he liked, like the piano. And that could decrease the stress in his life because he could enjoy both things he liked.

  5. I've made a successful decision to work for a photography company because one of my hobbies is photography. And in the future I want to be either an art director or free lance photographer. So ultimately i'm hoping this job will help me in the future, so I feel like this job was and will be a good decision for me.

  6. Shawn should defiantly become an engineer. If math is easy for anyone, this is the job for him. Doing something in the music industry is really hard these days. Having a degree in engineering, he will have high demands for jobs. He will always be doing something interesting; he’ll have a secure future and when the hard work pays off, he will be able to sit back and relax. His values match that type of job description. He has it all under his belt. He being independent shows that he’s responsible, this will make his career satisfying. I think he should go where his heart is telling him to go and not his head.

  7. Comment on an unsuccessful decision you made and how it did not match your values.

I was sixteen, when I committed a crime of robbery. My value of friendship over ruled my value of not stealing. I was influenced by my best friend to commit the crime. We were together and decided to snatch some lady’s purse. At the time I knew it was wrong, but I wanted my best friend’s respect. I snatched the lady’s purse knowing It was wrong, and I noticed my best friend in trouble so I chose to turn myself in rather than her getting in trouble for something I committed. Looking back I noticed that I shouldn’t have even took somebody else’s belongings. The consequences of my actions caused me to lose friends, respect, and my freedom.

  8. Comment on a successful decision you have made and how it matched your values.

My successful decision that I made is related to my unsuccessful decision that I just discussed. Although I stole a purse and got away, my friend was caught. Because I valued friendship, I couldn’t allow my best friend to get locked up. While I was safe in my auntie’s house she went outside and discovered that my friend Clara was in the police car out front. I got away and they somehow caught her. When I found out that she was being held I decided to come out front and take the blame for our actions. It lead me to coming to Juvenile Hall but on the bright side it helped me in multiple ways by, allowing me to be enrolled in college and help me focus on my behavior because I did what I felt was right.

  9. I think the most successful decision I have ever made was to have my 3 children. I had my oldest son at a young age and was not sure of how to be a mom and that I was not going to be able to have it. I have never regretted having my three sons. Even when it was hard and I was going through a divorce. They are what give me the courage to get through school. I live each day for them. They are my world. I decided to go back to school to show them that if I can do it with three kids they have no reason not to go to college and complete it with a degree.

    1. Hi Lanae, I have four children 21, 19, 18, and youngest 11. I do agree with you. Really I like a lot your words, “if I can do it, then they have no reason not to do it”. My values are my children. The successful decision I made when I go back to school because, I want to show there are no impossible in this life. Like parents we live each day for him and to help him reaches his goal, and then will be the happiness parents in the world.

    3. I agree with the both of you, I have a daughter she's almost 2 months . And i do feel what you both are saying because education is the most important thing there is, and thats one thing cant nobdy take away from you is your education. Once my dauggther turns 5, i plan to enroll her in a spanish speaking only school, being that she's mexican, black, and indian. I thought hat my life would have been over since i had my daugther at a young age but actually im blessed and my daughter is a healthy baby and she's so ADORABLE,the father of my child and I are happy that we had a baby girl. and we know that our careers are not effected by it and i hope our daugther can look at us and realize that she can do whatever she puts her mind too with a education . Although im away for a little bite i know my daugther is safe and sound with her father . Until im able to be there physically and not just emotionally and spiritually.

  10. I value becoming smarter in life and that is why I chose to go to college. My best decision I've made in life was moving here from Bakersfield. When I moved away I left a lot of friends and with that, many distractions as well. By living here with my aunt, I am kind of limited to friends which gives me more time to study and focus on my education. Other values I have is living your life to the fullest which was also important in my move here. San Diego blows Bakersfield out of the water and I plan on trying to be here and take it all in as long as possible if not move to another gorgeous city or town with a good college.

    2. Hello Kellen, I would like to salute you on the sacrifice you've made for the importance of your education. This shows me that you have set your priorities straight and want to make a difference in life. I'm sure what you did was very hard to do. I really regret not going to college right out of high school, and this is the best desiccation I've ever made. Which makes me have the same value and that’s becoming smarter and gaining wisdom so I can present myself in the working world. Knowing that you are limited to friends shows that you are overcoming the struggle, which is also a value that you have but might of not known. From what was written, it seems like those friends were keeping you from an education and always was distracted.

  11. Shawn's values consist of interesting work, a secure future, achieving something important, and being able to relax. If I was in his situation I would choose to continue on his engineering education. I feel as if he has a better chance fulfilling his values by choosing engineering over music because it seems as if it is not easier but more guaranteed to meet his views of what's important in life. Plus he can always continue to play piano In his spare time and start that journey for success down the musical path later on in life once he has a secure job.

  13. Based on Shawn's values the best major for him would be engineering. Two of Shawn's values is having a secure future and being independent. To reach these two goals you would need a practical and secure job. successful musical artists may be able to be independent but there are many musicians that have an unsecured future. A career in engineering matches Shawn's interests and his skills. One thing Shawn can do is to peruse a career in engineering and after he has a secure future and is a occupation that gives him leisure time he can go after his dream of being a musician. This plan may not be the most desirable but sometimes you need to put aside a dream for a little while so you can peruse another. It is common for artists to have something to fall back.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with you Shane. I think the best option for Shawn would also be majoring in engineering because it is more secure. Being a musician might be something he loves but he has to sit down and realize the pros and cons of becoming a musician. Becoming a musician isn't something where you can do that as a living and be able to have a secure job or pay. It might be something he could do for fun maybe on the weekends. Becoming an engineer is something that falls in all of his values and works out better with what he wants for himself in his future.

  14. Maria's decision is a hard one. Now that she can work part time she can help financially aid her family. If Maria were to continue her education it would but a financial struggle and it would be less time for her to be with her family. As much as i would support the idea of pursuing an education it sound like Maria loves her family. It may be better for her to use the education she has not to work as a teachers aid and the free time she has be with her family. It may be a long delay for her but she should put her education aside at least until her children are grown up. After she is relieved of the responsibility of her children she will have plenty of time to focus on her education and her goal to be a teacher. By looking as Maslows hierarchy of needs, love and belongingness (her family) must come before intellectual pursuits.

  15. A successful decision I have made is joining the Sharp Grossmont Volunteer Program. It has been such an eye opener on my career. It has given me more motivation to do what i want to major in which is physical therapy. I was able to work in the rehab center and see some patients and how they work with their therapist. It has given me a vibe on the hospital working environment and how they work as a team and need each other in order to help their patients. I want to work in a hospital environment and to this day i am still volunteering at Sharp Grossmont because it is my daily reminder of where i want to be in a couple of years and where i want to work. I'm going to have to work really hard to get where i want to be but i know it will be worth it.

  16. A sucessful decision that I have made was moving to United States. I was born and raised in Iraq, my dad and mom are originally from there. After the U.S.A invaded Iraq everything went in the worng way and living there turned into an imposible way. I left everything in my country, my family, friends, work and I moved to U.S.A. It was hard decision but now I know that I did the right thing because I am planning to get my college degree then transfer to the unviersity, have a respctful job and family are all I need.

  17. I think Shawn should take engineering as a major and keep practicing music as a habit. Since he was always interested in science and dreamed of making new inventions he should study engineering as a first major. He can be majoring in music after he graduates from ingenering this way he can get a job as an engineer to do interesting work, live on his own, and achieve something important. I had a friend when I was in Lebanon who studied accounting as a first major then studied music because she was always interested in playing piano.

    1. Tamara, I was thinking the same thing as I read the scenario. I also believe that he should make engineering his major, and use music as something to do on his alone time to relax. Engineering is one of the top majors that gets paid well yearly. I think of music as a hobby too, and because he has taken all his general ed classes needed for this major, and he dreamed of making new inventions, he should go along with engineering.

  18. A successful decision I have made was changing my major from architecture to pharmacy. When I came to USA I got my transcripts of majoring in architecture but too many people advised me to change my major for engineering branch to medicine branch. Most of people who advises me said that jobs in USA in the major of engineering are hard to find. Based on all of these advises I changed my major to pharmacy, and this is what I am working on know and I think this will be one of the good decisions I have made in my life.

  19. I read scenario one many time, and If I want to be honest with Shawn, even if my decision do not like him, but this is the truth. My opinion is the major must Shawn chooses is music. I found that Shawn will be greatest musician in order to his values. Music is part of art and can challenge us to think and see in new ways, and help each of us to develop personal sense of beauty and truth. Shawn’s values was independent, living on his own, secure future, interesting work, and the important one was achieving something important all those values match with music major. Look today how many engineering in California only, they are millions, but the question is how many are famous and how much they make in his lifetime, on the other hand, all artiest are famous and make huge money, and his named after sun. Shawn will be craze if he chooses engineering major.

  20. A successful decision that I made was going to school to be in the medical field. For me I know I could never work a desk job. I needed something that would match my personality and actually allow me to enjoy my job. I had played with other majors and done research into other careers. But the one that got my attention was the ER and Trauma. Right out of high school that summer I went o school and became an EMT. In that program we had a lot of opportunity to work in the ER and this is where I decided to change from being on an ambulance to working in the ER. I liked the rush and the pressure of keeping someone alive. Also there is a lot of opportunity for jobs in this field. I think it is also satisfying work because you can go home knowing you did good and maybe saved somebody's life, not just sit at a desk all day and do paperwork for someone else.

  21. In regards to Shawn choosing a major I think he should stay with his engineering an keep music as a side hobby. I understand his dilemma as I was also very wrapped up in music and still am. I think music is a great outlet for many people and works to stimulate the mind. However it is very hard to make a career out of music. However if he goes to school and becomes a great engineer he could possibly invent something that could change the world or further society. Also he could make a great deal of money at it. I had to step away from music and direct my self more towards school as well and in the long run it is worth it in a sense because your options are broader and you have a higher chance of success.

  22. My successful decision I have made is my major. I really am doing a major I will do good in. My major is Industrial and systems engineering where I will be optimizing large plants. And to me that was very fun because that is something I believe I will love to do. I say this is one of my most successful decisions because it is a career decision for me. When I get out of school I will be making enough money to provide for myself and possibly for a new house and all that will be a really good start for my life after college.

  23. In Maria's situation, I believe that even though spending time with her family is important, she should still pursue in the career that she wants as a teacher, because it will make her happy and, and she will love her career which is important. Yes it will be difficult to spend time with her family, but going to school isn't going to keep her away from her family forever, only certain amount of hours, and she can balance her time with her family. Once she pursues her career, she can become a teacher, and teach at her children's school, so that when school is over, she will be right there with her kids in the early afternoon to spend the rest of the day with them. Even if she decides to teach at a different school, elementary schools get out early so she will have time to spend with her family. She will also have better income, and be able to financially support her family, without having any problems.

I'm trying hard to start eating healthy to keep help my body right now and in the future. I also make sure I drink plenty of water because that is the most important drink you need for your body. Excersing more often also helps me keep my health intact and is a great hobby. I'm pretty skinny and i can basically eat whatever i want and not get overweight so that makes it harder to make healthy choices when i see no results. I've heard that the way you eat when you're younger has a great influence on your lifestyle when you're older so i figured i better change it now.

  25. An unsuccessful decision that didn't match my values was to not watch too many movies. My value is to not waste too much time during the day and I made a wrong decision to just watch too many movies. I wanted to be more active that day to keep my body healthy but I chose to a decision contrary to that. Watching too many movies also takes away from other things you could be doing and can have a bad effect on your health. T.v. shows sometimes are just the same because it waste too much of the day.

In my case I don’t have to be active because school and work don’t allow me the time to be, but after reading yours now I want to go out and workout instead.

I think Maria has to stay in college until she receive her bachelor degree. Even the Mexican culture use to say that women has to satay in their house to take care of their children, this times are different. Now, women have the opportunity to follow their dreams and Maria have the right to do it. This will benefit the family economic position, Maria will set an example to her kids where they will learn that study is important to be successful in life. I think Maria can be helped by her husband, and they can organize their time in order for the children to have either the father or the mother taking care of them.

  28. Shawn should choose to major in Engineering. It sounds like he is very skilled in math and science so he would do well as an engineer. It would be easier to maintain his values as an engineer because engineering is a high paying field of work. With this degree he will be intependent and have a secure future like he wants. I think a career in music would suit his values of doing interesting work, doing something important to him, and being able to relax, but very few people make it in the music industry so engineering is a safer choice.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Shawn should not be torn between music and engineer. He has a lot of goals to achieve, many things that he wants to do which require money, and a regular monthly salary to afford for all these. If he is good at the engineer requirements he should definitely study and be an engineer because the engineer degree is one of the top majors and then jobs that can be acquired, thus it is the right way for him to get all what he ever dreamed of. Since engineers get paid highly for their jobs. Furthermore, if he likes music then he can play piano or do anything related to music at his free time.

  30. Scenario 1: What should be my major?
Based on Shawn’s values, it seems that he should choose a major in engineering. Engineering offers Shawn a more stable career where he can become independent, live on his own, do interesting work, and achieve something important. However, engineering can a stressful job and less relaxing. Additionally, math and physics are the basis for engineering and since he was always good in those areas, he can do well. However, I do believe that Shawn can find a way to mix engineering and music together. People have used engineering in music like audio engineering. Also, audio production and studio techniques can use techniques of engineering an programming to produce music.

  31. Comment on a successful decision you have made and how it matched your values.
A successful decision I have made it to pursue a career in counseling. Some important values of mine are helping others, happiness, making a difference, respect, and friendship. I at first thought I wanted to be a doctor and so I started to pursue taking pre-medical school requirements. However, I soon figured out that this pathway was not for me. Everything I was learning and doing did not fit with who I am and what I wanted. I learned that I can help people in a different way, non-medical way. Education became the way in which I can help people.

    1. That sounds wonderful that you want your future career to be counseling. It's such a great thing that you want to help people grow and become happier. I think that since you did want to become a doctor you could always get your PHD in whatever your studying. You can get the title of doctor but at the same time do something you love. I respect that you followed what you believed was best for you. Many people continue with a major and finish it just for the money and they never end up loving what they are doing. All in all, that's a great choice and i wish you the best of luck.

  32. I think Sean should go the safe route. Although he could love many things I don't think music could give him a secure future. If he were to major in engineering then the chance of him getting a job after college would be really high. He would meet professors or friends that could get him a job easily. If he were to invest his college years in music, the chance that he actually will have something to do after is not likely. Many musicians don't even have a degree in the arts so i doubt a degree in it will make much of a difference. He's going to have to compete with people of all ages for a record deal that may or may not give him the financial security he wants. In the end engineering will fulfill his life long dream of working and building things alongside his personal goals.

  33. I think the major Shawn should choose based on his values is Engineering. Although I would personally choose Music if I was him, that is beside the point. Shawn wants to have a secure future and be involved in interesting work. Although music is interesting I feel engineering would provide him more challenges that would excite Shawn and give him a good test. Both majors would allow him to relax, live on his own, and be independent. This was a tough decision, but just cause of two values it can change the outcome of what a person chooses even if the others work for both.

  34. A successful decision that I have made recently is to get back into reading novels and autobiographies of important people. Its has actually been some years since I have completed a whole book. I forgot how much fun it is and all the things you can learn. The way it matched my values is by educating myself. With the knowledge the was gained from reading the books it allows my to pass on what I have learned and by passing it on hopefully it will make a difference in someones life and possibly even have a impact on mankind. A unsuccessful decision that I have made recently is to start going back to the gym. For about the past two weeks I have been saying over and over that I will be going back to the gym and exercising more but that has not happened. There are a variety of reason that have stopped me from going but that shouldn’t matter. Maintaing a healthy life style is very important to me but I haven’t been putting the work in.

  35. RE: Scenario #1
I think that Shawn needs to reevaluate what is his passion is and stick with it. Another option would be for Shawn to either set a schedule for his different activities. He should see if it is possible to make a steady schedule, because he is getting ahead of himself and boviously is getting overwhehelmed. HE needs to sit down and think what would he be happier doing for the rest of his life and stick with it.

  36. Scenario # 2
I think Maria should continue with her studies, as it will pay off for her and her family in the long-run. Although her husband sees the effects in the present, Maria needs to sit down with her husband and plan what their life would be like with more money coming in present and future. It probably would help the family with the extra income, but they need to realize together the earning potential of her higher degree. In other words, they need to analyze what they would be losing now in comparison

I have made a successful decision at work, by staying there, and promoting to manager at my uncle's restaurant. I love helping people and serving others which matches my values perfectly. I am a people person which is why I love interactions and communication. Being a server is a great feeling, knowing that I have satisfied the needs of my customers to my highest standards. Being a manager to my employees is a great feeling, knowing that they are comfortable and happy at their job to a fair extent. The value of helping, comfort, and serving is one that is positive and great to one's life.

  38. A successful decision I have made during my lifetime was the choice to work at Bank of America. This decision matched my values because it gives me the opportunity to be successful. I chose to work at Bank of America to allow me to experience different career opportunities that I may want to pursue. My job allows be to engage with many people who have successful careers in the banking field and even the corporate field which has been able to give me a clear view on what it takes to have those kinds of careers. I love the fact that I began working for such a successful company at such a young age because it allows me to have time to make my career decisions and choose a major. It also allows me to get a head start on my career and I have already started building myself.

  39. Scenario I:

I believe that Shawn needs to think deep and realize what is truly best for him. He needs to figure out not only what fits his schedule best, but most importantly what fits his life style and personality best. He is in need of security and confidence in what he is aiming for. He needs to take his time to realize what he wants to do for the rest of his life, for rushing only complicates the matter. With time and patience, Shawn will be successful in following the path which is best for him.

  40. Scenario 2: Should Maria continue her education?

I believe that Maria should definitely continue her education because education is very important if you want to be successful. I believe in having a family of my own as well as having a successful career to support my family and I think that is what Maria should also do. She already has a family but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to get her bachelors degree. Even though it may be a struggle for Maria and her family to pay for her tuition, there’s always financial aid that can help her get her degree and I truly think that if she was able to graduate and become a teacher, it would all pay off. It may be hard work for a while but once she is done and working I’m sure she wont regret it. On the other hand, I do think that if Maria chooses not to get her degree then she will regret it in the future.

    1. I agree with you and the financial aid part as well as regretting not getting her degree in the long run.

  41. I think Maria should continue her education. If she wants to become a teacher she'll need a bachelors degree and I think if you want to do something you should do it. Her husbands point is valid but I don't think shed be spending anymore time away from the kids she can still go to school while her children are in school and be successful. There is financial aid to help her pay for it and with the additional income theyre making with her being a teacher they can pay off her loan in no time. I think Marie will regret not moving forward with her education in the future if she doesn't do it now.
